Matthew-Tkachuk

The blockbuster trade between the Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames, David Quinn being hired as coach of the San Jose Sharks and John Klingberg signing a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks were three of the big topics discussed on the summer check-in episode of the "NHL @TheRink podcast" recorded Thursday.

Co-hosts Dan Rosen and Shawn P. Roarke went deep into the trade that sent forward
Matthew Tkachuk
from Calgary to Florida, and forward Jonathan Huberdeau and defenseman MacKenzie Weegar the other way.
They both agreed that Tkachuk was the best player in the trade and the Panthers are better for getting him even if it means giving up Huberdeau and Weegar, but Roarke and Rosen also talked about how impressed they were that the Flames were able to get such a big return for a player in Tkachuk, who was a restricted free agent that they knew did not want to sign with them.
They went on to discuss the impact Quinn could make, but how it's going to be quite a difficult challenge for San Jose to be a team that qualifies for the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season because of their offense.
The fact that Klingberg could not find a team to sign him to a multiyear contract confounded both the co-hosts as each said Klingberg is worthy of a four- or five-year contract. Rosen said he believes the Ducks will move Klingberg ahead of the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline to a playoff contender.
They also talked about how surprising it is that forward
Nazem Kadri
remains an unrestricted free agent after helping the Colorado Avalanche win the Stanley Cup last season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins' changes on defense, replacing Mike Matheson (Montreal Canadiens) and John Marino (New Jersey Devils) with Jeff Petry and Ty Smith, was another topic discussed along with forward Patrik Laine signing a four-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets and forward Vladimir Tarasenko's future with the St. Louis Blues.
