Weegar was selected by the Florida Panthers in the seventh round (No. 206) of the 2013 NHL draft after his first season with Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where the defenseman had 44 points (eight goals, 36 assists) in 62 games and led the QMJHL with a plus-55 rating to help the Mooseheads win the Memorial Cup.
Weegar had another big season for Halifax in 2013-14, getting 59 points (12 goals, 47 assists) and a plus-56 rating in 61 games before signing with the Panthers on May 29, 2014.

He split his first professional season between San Antonio of the American Hockey League and Cincinnati of the ECHL.
After playing the entire 2015-16 season with Portland of the AHL, Weegar found his footing in 2016-17, getting 36 points, including 14 goals, in 60 games for Springfield to earn a late season call-up by the Panthers. He made his NHL debut against the Montreal Canadiens on April 3, 2017.
Following the three-game stint, Weegar stuck with the Panthers in 2017-18 and scored his first NHL goal in his season debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 20, 2017. He finished his first NHL season with eight points (two goals, six assists) and a plus-5 rating in 60 games.
The arrival of Joel Quenneville as coach for the 2019-20 season helped Weegar take his game to a new level. He set NHL career highs in goals (seven) and points (18) in 45 games, often playing on the top pairing with Aaron Ekblad.
