NYR@PIT: Blueger nets tying goal after friendly carom

PITTSBURGH -- Tristan Jarry bounced back from being pulled in his previous start to make 31 saves and help the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 shootout win against the New York Rangers at PPG Paints Arena on Friday.

Jarry allowed nine goals on 33 shots in his first two starts of the season, including surrendering three on six shots before being removed in the first period in his last start against the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 15. He backed up Casey DeSmith the past two games for Pittsburgh (3-2-0), which has won three straight in overtime or a shootout.
"I think it's just when those goals go in, just a quick reset," Jarry said. "I think it's good for our team. It puts us above .500. It puts us on a bit of a streak. It's something we can ride off of."
Filip Chytil, Adam Fox and Kaapo Kakko scored in a span of 3:01 in the second period, and Igor Shesterkin made 26 saves for the Rangers (1-2-1), who led 3-1 late in the second period. They will face the Penguins here again Sunday.
"We have to understand situational hockey," Rangers coach David Quinn said. "You're up 3-1 and a lot of good things are happening, and we just didn't really understand the moment. With six minutes to go, we're still doing things like we're down 3-1. It came back and bit us.
"Our third period, I thought we did some good things too, but it's a good team. They're going to push back."

Teddy Blueger tied the score 3-3 at 11:23 of the third with a wrist shot after a shot from Pierre-Olivier Joseph, a defenseman making his NHL debut, went off the end boards to Blueger near the right post.
Jake Guentzel and Kris Letang scored for the Penguins in the shootout. Jarry allowed Artemi Panarin to score but denied Mika Zibanejad and Tony DeAngelo.
The Penguins have trailed in each of their three wins and have gone down by two goals the past two games.
"I thought we played hard after we got down a couple goals," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "But it seems to be a little bit of a recurring theme where it takes that type of adversity in the game for us to respond. We've got to find ways to have better starts and try to dictate the terms earlier than we did. That's something that we've had a conversation with the players about."

The Rangers trailed 1-0 after the first period but scored three goals to start the second.
Rust gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season at 10:29 of the first period before Chytil tied it 1-1 at 2:41 of the second. After Phillip Di Giuseppe forced Brian Dumoulin into a turnover in the corner, Chytil skated in alone on Jarry before going to his backhand to score in a second straight game.
New York scored two goals 24 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead. Fox put the Rangers ahead 2-1 with a one-timer on a power play 5:18, and Kakko scored on a wrist shot off a rebound at 5:42.
"Going into the third with the lead, you want to hold that," Fox said. "But we're a young team and that just comes with experience and learning. You don't want to have too many learning experiences where you're losing games that you could've won, but I think early in the year it's something we can learn and not let it happen again."
Jared McCann cut it to 3-2 on a power play after he shot into the crease and Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren batted it in with his hand at 16:56. It was McCann's first goal since Jan. 14, 2020.
"We can't keep chasing the game," McCann said. "There's going to be teams out there that keep pressing and play a full 60 minutes. We can't be sitting back. We've got to keep pushing forward and it starts with the puck drop."
NOTES:Joseph and Rangers defenseman K'Andre Miller each got his first NHL point. Joseph, who had an assist on Blueger's goal, had three shots and three hits in 13:02. Miller, in his fourth NHL game, had an assist on Kakko's goal. … Panarin (34 goals, 66 assists) set a Rangers record for fewest games to 100 points (73). Mark Messier reached 100 in 74 games in 1991-92.
