Schneider made five saves on six shots in relief of Keith Kinkaid during an 8-3 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, his first appearance since Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round last season. He had surgery to repair cartilage in his left hip May 1.
New Jersey has lost four of five (1-3-1).
The Red Wings go for their third straight win after starting the season with nine losses in their first 10 games (1-7-2). Dylan Larkin combined for five points (two goals, three assists) in victories against the Dallas Stars and Columbus Blue Jackets.
