The Detroit Red Wings selected Svechnikov with the No. 19 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, hoping the Russia-born forward could add to promising crop of young players in the organization.
Svechnikov scored 32 goals in each of his two seasons with Cape Breton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2014-16 and had a productive first season with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League with 51 points (20 goals, 31 assists) in 74 games. He also had 12 points in 19 games to help the Griffins win the Calder Cup that season. Svechnikov played two games with Detroit prior to the start of the Calder Cup Playoffs, including his NHL debut April 3.
