Rooney, a center, signed his first NHL contract with the Devils as an undrafted free agent on Feb. 27, 2017, after he scored 21 points (13 goals, eight assists) in 71 games with Albany of the American Hockey League. He made his NHL debut against the Washington Capitals two nights later.

Rooney remained with the Devils on a one-year contract he signed July 26, 2017. He played one game for New Jersey in 2017-18 and 71 with Binghamton of the AHL, where he scored 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists) in 71 games.
He split the 2018-19 season between Binghamton and New Jersey and had 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 41 NHL games. Rooney became a full-time player for the Devils in 2019-20 and scored nine points (four goals, five assists) in 49 games before the season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
