Rooney remained with the Devils on a one-year contract he signed July 26, 2017. He played one game for New Jersey in 2017-18 and 71 with Binghamton of the AHL, where he scored 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists) in 71 games.
He split the 2018-19 season between Binghamton and New Jersey and had 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 41 NHL games. Rooney became a full-time player for the Devils in 2019-20 and scored nine points (four goals, five assists) in 49 games before the season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
