A native of Winterthur, Switzerland, Mueller was selected by the San Jose Sharks with the No. 18 pick of the 2013 NHL Draft.
He played two seasons with Everett of the Western Hockey League and signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Sharks on Sept. 22, 2013. Mueller scored four points (one goal, three assists) in 39 games for the Sharks in his rookie season of 2014-15, but he played the majority of the next two seasons with San Jose of the American Hockey League before being traded to the Devils on June 17, 2017.

Mueller's first season in New Jersey was limited to 28 games because of a fractured clavicle, but he returned in time to help the Devils qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2012. He then scored an NHL career high 11 points (one goal, 10 assists) in 53 games in 2018-19.
On the international stage, Mueller represented Switzerland at the IIHF World Junior Championship three years in a row (2013-15).
