A native of Roseville, Minnesota, Anderson was selected by the Devils in the third round (No. 73) of the 2016 NHL Draft after two seasons with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.
He joined the University of Minnesota-Duluth men's hockey team in the fall of 2016 and scored 37 points (12 goals, 25 assists) in 39 games as a freshman and was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team and the NCAA West Region All-Tournament Team.

Anderson won a national championship the following season when he scored 11 goals and 16 assists in 36 games. He then signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Devils on April 15, 2018.
He made his NHL debut against the Florida Panthers on Oct. 27, 2018 and scored his first goal in the League against the Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 15.
On the international stage, Anderson represented the United States twice at the IIHF World Junior Championship. He won a gold medal in 2017 and was team captain in 2018.
