Kevin Fiala will not be ready for the start of the Los Angeles Kings' training camp.
The forward sustained fractures to his left lower leg while playing for Team Switzerland in the 2026 Winter Olympics in February and was ruled out for the rest of the NHL season.
At the time, the Kings announced he would be reevaluated at the end of the regular season.
The Kings said on Thursday that the 30-year-old “underwent a procedure related to the initial surgery to repair injuries sustained” at the Olympics and that “a timeline for his return to play will be determined as he continues to recover.”
Fiala was hit into the side boards by forward Tom Wilson, who then fell on his left leg at 17:10 of the third period in a 5-1 loss to Team Canada. Switzerland, without Fiala, defeated Italy 3-0 in the qualifying round but lost 3-2 in overtime to Finland in the quarterfinals.
Fiala had 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists) in 56 games last season for the Kings, who finished 35-27-20 and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs as the second wild card from the Western Conference. They were swept in the first round by the Colorado Avalanche.
Fiala, who is entering his fifth season with the Kings, has 528 points (229 goals, 299 assists) in 707 NHL regular-season games with the Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild and Kings.
He has three seasons remaining on a seven-year, $55.125 million contract ($7.875 million average annual value) he signed with Los Angeles on June 30, 2022, one day after he was acquired in a trade with Minnesota for defenseman Brock Faber and a first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.
