Facts and Figures: Matthews on goal-a-game pace for Maple Leafs

Matthews has 13 goals in 13 games, having missed 14 with a left shoulder injury before returning Wednesday and scoring twice against the San Jose Sharks. The third-year center is the first player since Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1995-96 to average at least a goal a game through games played Dec. 1 (minimum 10 games played); Lemieux scored 22 goals in 19 games. Matthews is the fifth Maple Leafs player in the NHL's modern era (since 1943-44) to score 13 goals in his first 13 games.
Forward Mitch Marner had two assists for his fourth straight multi-assist game. His 38 points (six goals, 32 assists) are tied for third in the NHL with Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov. Marner shares the NHL lead in assists with Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen, who's first in scoring with 43 points (11 goals, 32 assists).
The Maple Leafs are the first team to win 10 road games this season. They set a team record for the fewest games (13) needed to earn 10 road wins.

Weber scores twice in Canadiens win

Weber, who made his season debut Thursday after recovering from knee surgery, scored the 190th and 191st goals of his NHL career, moving him within five of tying Scott Stevens (196) for 23rd place on the NHL's all-time list among defensemen. He trails only Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins (198) for the most goals among active defensemen. It was the 18th multigoal game of Weber's NHL career, tying him with Mike Green of the Detroit Red Wings for the most among active defensemen. Hockey Hall of Famer Paul Coffey holds the record for defensemen with 55.
Weber became the first Canadiens defenseman to score multiple goals in a regular-season game against the Rangers since Mathieu Schneider scored two Nov. 23, 1993.

Chabot passes 30-point mark in Senators win

Thomas Chabot had two assists for the Ottawa Senators in
a 6-2 win
against the Sharks at Canadian Tire Centre, becoming the first defenseman to reach 30 points this season. He has 31 points (seven goals, 24 assists) in 27 games and is the 16th different defenseman in NHL history to have at least 30 points through games played Dec. 1. It hadn't been done since 2005-06, when Toronto's Bryan McCabe had 35 (10 goals, 25 assists).
Chabot can become the first member of the current Senators franchise to lead all NHL defensemen in points. Erik Karlsson, who made his return to Ottawa with the Sharks after being traded to San Jose on Sept. 13, did it four times (2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16). Two defensemen accomplished the feat with the original Ottawa Senators: George Boucher (1922-23, 1923-24) and King Clancy (1929-30).

Backup goalies stepping up

Rookie Adin Hill made 25 saves and the Arizona Coyotes
defeated the St. Louis Blues 6-1
at Gila River Arena for their third consecutive win. Hill, who allowed his first goal of the season at 1:26 of the second period, is 3-0-0 in four appearances (two starts) this season and has stepped in after injuries to Antti Raanta and Darcy Kuemper with an 0.39 goals-against average, .984 save percentage and one shutout.
Mikko Koskinen, who returned to the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers after spending the past five seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League, made 31 saves in
a 2-1 win
against the Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Place. Koskinen is 8-2-1 with a 2.15 GAA, .928 save percentage and two shutouts for the Oilers and 10-3-1 in his NHL career, which includes going 2-1-0 with the New York Islanders in 2010-11. At 30 years, 137 days, Koskinen is the oldest goalie at the time of his 10th NHL win since Viktor Fasth, who was 30 years, 212 days old when he got the win in a 4-0 victory for the Anaheim Ducks against the Calgary Flames on March 8, 2013.
