EDM@MTL: Kahun buries feed from Draisaitl

MONTREAL --Connor McDavid had two assists to extend his multipoint streak to seven games, and the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in overtime at Bell Centre on Wednesday.

McDavid has scored 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) during the streak and leads the NHL with 104 (33 goals, 71 assists) in 55 games this season.
"There's some nights, to tell you the truth, I look and the amount of chances McDavid creates on the ice, you wonder why he doesn't get more points," Edmonton coach Dave Tippett said. "But he's had a phenomenal year. He's the leader of our group in a lot of different ways: his play, his leadership on and off the ice. So between him and Leon [Draisaitl], they really drive our offense and they've had superb years."

Dominik Kahun scored 27 seconds into overtime, Draisaitl had a goal and an assist, and Mike Smith made 26 saves for Edmonton (35-18-2), which has won three in a row and six of its past seven games.
The Oilers have clinched the No. 2 seed from the Scotia North Division and will play the No. 3 Winnipeg Jets in the Stanley Cup First Round.
"[Winnipeg is] a great team," Edmonton forward Alex Chiasson said. "I thought going into this year they got really deep up front, three really good lines. If I'm not mistaken, [Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck] won the Vezina a few years ago, last year, so they've got some good, young defensemen back there. It'll be a great match for us. We've worked a long way this year and in the past to be where we're at now, and we're excited for the opportunity."
Nick Suzuki scored twice, linemate Cole Caufield had a goal and an assist, and Cayden Primeau made 18 saves for Montreal (24-21-11), which scratched goalie Jake Allen, defensemen Jeff Petry and Joel Edmundson, and forwards Tyler Toffoli and Eric Staal in its final regular-season game.
The Canadiens, the No. 4 seed from the North, will play the No. 1 Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round.
"It's special to be part of a series like this," Montreal defenseman Ben Chiarot said. "Every time I think about it, it makes me more mad that there won't be people in the building, because you can just think about how electric the buildings would be going back and forth for a series like this. So it's going to be fun and I'll remember it well after my career is done for sure."

Caufield made it 1-0 on Montreal's first shot of the game at 1:58 of the first period.
Chiasson tied it 1-1 at 8:35 when his shot deflected off Canadiens forward Jake Evans and went under Primeau's arm.
Suzuki scored a shorthanded goal to make it 2-1 at 9:58, shooting under Smith's glove on a 2-on-1. It was the Canadiens' ninth shorthanded goal this season, which tied the Boston Bruins for the most in the NHL.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tied it 2-2 at 10:53 on that power play before Draisaitl scored again on the man-advantage to give Edmonton a 3-2 lead at 10:47 of the second period.
Draisaitl, who is second in the NHL behind McDavid with 83 points (31 goals, 52 assists), extended his multipoint streak to seven games (seven goals, nine assists).
Suzuki tied it 3-3 at 8:22 of the third period when he redirected a centering pass from Caufield.
"I thought we had a great game, creating a lot," Suzuki said of playing with Caufield. "The chemistry is going to keep getting better and he sees the ice really well. He's always ready to shoot, and I like playing with guys like that."
Kahun won it on a breakaway off a pass from Draisaitl. Tyson Barrie, who had an assist on the play, has scored 48 points (eight goals, 40 assists), passing Adam Fox of the New York Rangers for the most among NHL defensemen.
"[Barrie] makes a lot of plays from the back end and playing with the top two lines at 5-on-5," Chiasson said. "So he's been a key player for us all year, and he will be a key player for us also going into the playoffs."
