The Toronto native had 44 points (12 goals, 32 assists) for St. Michael's in the Ontario Junior A Hockey League in 2012-13. The next season, he had 63 points (16 goals, 47 assists) for St. Michaels and was drafted by the Canadiens. He headed to Notre Dame where he had 138 points (41 goals, 97 assists) in four seasons, increasing his production each season and also becoming a reliable penalty killer. He was captain his senior season and was named First Team All-Big Ten. He signed a two-year, entry-level contract Montreal on April 9, 2018.

Evans played for Laval in the American Hockey League in 2018-19, finishing with 45 points (13 goals, 32 assists).
He was leading Laval in scoring with 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) when he got called up to the Canadiens. Evans made his NHL debut Feb. 6 against the Anaheim Ducks and scored his first NHL goal two games later against the Arizona Coyotes on Feb. 10.
