DET@MTL: Price becomes Canadiens' winningest goalie

MONTREAL -- Carey Price set the Montreal Canadiens record with his 315th win in their 3-1 victory against the Detroit Red Wings at Bell Centre on Tuesday.

Price, who made 20 saves, is 315-221-67 in 12 seasons, all with the Canadiens. Jacques Plante went 314-133 with 107 ties from 1952-63. The NHL added overtime in 1983-84, and the shootout for the 2005-06 season.
"I'm very proud, obviously, first and foremost, to be standing here today with this puck in my hand," Price said. "I'm thankful for all the help that I've gotten along the way."

Max Domi scored his second goal of the game into an empty net at 19:11 of the third period, and Brett Kulak scored for Montreal (37-26-7), which swept the four-game season series and outscored the Red Wings 21-7.
"(Price is) the best in the world for a reason; he has been for a long time and he will be for even a longer time," Domi said. "So it's a pretty special night for him. We're happy to be a part of it."

The Canadiens, who lost three of their previous four games, are tied in points (81) with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
"With his record-breaking win aside, that's a huge win for our team and we needed that and he's a huge part of that," Domi said.
Andreas Athanasiou scored for Detroit (24-36-10), which has lost three in a row and has been eliminated from playoff contention. Jonathan Bernier made 33 saves.
"Overall, I thought our compete level was much higher," Bernier said. "It comes down to the scoring chances they had, and Carey made some big saves there in the third. We had the chance to tie it up and we just couldn't find back of the net."
Domi gave the Canadiens a 1-0 lead at 12:27 of the second when he deflected Andrew Shaw's shot from the right corner.

Kulak scored his fourth goal at 17:32 to make it 2-0. Tomas Tatar got his second assist of the game with a backhand pass to set up Kulak's one-timer from beyond the top of the left face-off circle.
Athanasiou made it 2-1 with his 24th goal 40 seconds into the third period.
"You want to make sure your effort is there on a nightly basis, and the last two games I felt like we lost a lot of 1-on-1 battles and we were a step behind a little bit all over the ice," Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader said. "They're a good skating team. I thought we skated well and the (defense) had good gaps."

Price made a left pad save on Tyler Bertuzzi's breakaway chance, then covered up the puck with Canadiens forward Joel Armia and defenseman Jordie Benn sprawled across the crease in front of him at 8:02 after saving Frans Nielsen's rebound attempt.
"I just tried to do the 'Dominator' and spread out, cover the goal line," Price said, referencing former NHL goalie Dominik Hasek. "I was fortunate that we were able to get a whistle. I was just trying to cover everything low and our guys dogpiled it in the crease and we were able to get a whistle and take a sigh of relief."

They said it

"He makes everything look so easy, so calm, always square to the puck, doesn't give you a whole lot of net to shoot at, and he just does it every game, year in, and year out. (He's) extremely impressive and keeps being just as good as he's always been. It seems like no aging signs there whatsoever." -- Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall on Canadiens goalie Carey Price
"(Price) played a great game tonight. He gave us a chance to win and really saved us, especially in the third period. And when you have accomplished something like that, it's really big. I know he's a very humble goalie, but I'm sure he's proud of what he's accomplished. It's always been his goal to win a Stanley Cup in Montreal, and that's what we wish for him soon." -- Canadiens coach Claude Julien
