COL@WPG: Wheeler finishes beautiful passing play

WINNIPEG --Blake Wheeler had a goal and three assists for the Winnipeg Jets in a 7-4 win against the Colorado Avalanche at Bell MTS Place on Tuesday.

Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba each had a goal and two assists, and Mathieu Perreault, Kyle Connor, Bryan Little and Andrew Copp also scored for the Jets (27-13-2), who have scored at least four goals in three of their past four games (3-1-0). Connor Hellebuyck made 37 saves.
"I think we like what we can do offensively," Wheeler said. "So there's going to be nights where we pour it on and their goalie plays well, and there's going to be nights where we get a few and make the most of our chances."

Gabriel Landeskog scored twice, Carl Soderberg had a goal and an assist, and Nathan MacKinnon and Tyson Barrie each had two assists for the Avalanche (20-15-8), who have lost seven of their past eight games (1-5-2). Philipp Grubauer made 14 saves.
"Well, it's easy to say you deserve something but if you give up [seven] goals, it's hard to win a game," Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen said. "We won the shots (41-21), but we didn't win the game, so it doesn't really matter. We created a lot of chances, the first period especially. We played really good and they got a 2-0 lead there. We came back and just tough result."
Perreault gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead at 3:05 of the first period, deking Grubauer in front after a centering pass from Brandon Tanev.

Connor extended the lead to 2-0 at 13:57, scoring on his own rebound off the post on the power play.
Landeskog cut it to 2-1 with a redirection on the power play at 16:04.
Wheeler converted off a give-and-go with Scheifele while shorthanded to make it 3-1 at 3:22 of the second period, and Little made it 4-1 at 6:32 on the power play.
"We crossed and both guys went to me and [Wheeler] was wide open and made a nice shot on it," Scheifele said.

Soderberg scored to make it 4-2 on a breakaway at 16:10, and Ryan Graves brought Colorado to within 4-3 at 17:43 on a wraparound.
"They're a really good team," Trouba said. "We got up a little bit and then they kind of crept back in. Going into the third we were in a decent spot and we wanted to take advantage of the position we put ourselves in and we played a pretty good third period."
Copp pushed the lead to 5-3 at 3:59 of the third period, and Scheifele made it 6-3 at 11:12 on a breakaway.
Landeskog scored his NHL career-high 27th goal on the power play at 16:24 to make it 6-4, but Trouba scored into an empty net on the power play at 18:54 to make it 7-4.
"We have to stay positive, even if we've been losing a lot," Soderberg said. "It's still a new game [on Wednesday against Calgary Flames] and I think we played pretty good. Take that with us and battle even harder tomorrow."

They said it

"I think that type of effort, that type of commitment 5-on-5 is a winning recipe on most nights. Again, you got to eliminate a couple of those mistakes. You can't hand good teams -- Calgary or Winnipeg, doesn't matter who it is -- you can't hand good teams goals and then we got to win a little bit on the special teams. We've got to find a way to keep one or two of those out of our net and capitalize on one or two of our chances and it's a different game. There's a lot to like, but there's also some things we've got to fix." -- Avalanche coach Jared Bednar
"You can replicate that game. You can do that night after night. You may not score five, but you can do that night after night. If it's going to be an open game, we're going to get our chances. But it's not something you can count on in the Western Conference." -- Jets coach Paul Maurice
