Ward makes 48 saves for Hurricanes in win against Oilers

EDMONTON-- Cam Ward made 48 saves, and Jordan Staal had a goal and three assists for the Carolina Hurricanes in 5-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Tuesday.
Teuvo Teravainen scored twice in the first period, and Elias Lindholm and Jaccob Slavin also scored for the Hurricanes (2-1-1) in the second of a four-game road trip.
Mark Letestu, Ryan Strome and Milan Lucic scored for Edmonton (1-4-0), who have lost four straight games. Laurent Brossoit made 16 saves.

"We started on time and then we just got sloppy and got a little rattled with a too many men on the ice penalty, took a few penalties when we had possession of the puck, and we turned it over," Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said. "We turned it over too much and made it real hard on ourselves, and therefore, gave up 50-plus shots."
Teravainen scored on the first shot, 20 seconds into the game to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead. He scored his second on the power play at 4:53 to put the Hurricanes ahead 2-0. Lindholm gave Carolina a 3-0 lead with 1:20 remaining in the period on the power play.
"Coming out with 3-0 after the first is always nice," Staal said. "We made it interesting again, but we'll continue to learn from those ones. They're a very dangerous team so they can make a push back and they did a good job of trying to climb back into it, but I thought [Ward] ended up finishing them off at the end."

Letestu scored on the power play at 17:11 of the second period to make it 3-1 on a scramble in front of Ward.
Staal gave the Hurricanes a 4-1 lead, scoring shorthanded at 4:03 of the third period.
"It's tough to win games when you give up two or three goals and then you start playing," Oilers defenseman Oscar Klefbom said. "It's really bad right now. When Brossoit comes in we have to help him out better and play a solid game. It was not a good game. Everybody in this room knows we have better."
Strome scored at 5:03 on the same tripping penalty to Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk to make it 4-2. Strome tipped a pass from Jussi Jokinen by Ward for his first goal with the Oilers.
"It's backbreaking when you have an opportunity to get to within a goal on the power play and the next thing you know you are down another," Lucic said. "Our power play has to be better. Special teams is a lot of times what games come down to and we gave up two while we were shorthanded and one when they were."
Strome got his first assist with Edmonton at 8:06, setting up Lucic to make it 4-3.
The Oilers came close to tying the game, but Ward made two saves before Slavin scored at 10:36 to make it 5-3.

Faulk passed the puck to Staal at the side of the net and he slid it to Lindholm for an easy tap-in.

Ward stopped Oilers forward Patrick Maroon on a breakaway at 9:40 of the third period to keep the score 4-3.

Highlight of the game

Staal scored the game-winning goal on a shorthanded breakaway. He forced a turnover at the blue line, skated down the ice and beat Brossoit with a quick shot.
