On Jan. 8, 2010, Barrie traded Strome to Niagara, where he remained throughout his junior career.
The 6-foot-1, 199-pound forward continued to show his offensive talents in the 2010-11 season with 33 goals, 73 assists and 106 points, finishing third in OHL scoring. Strome was named a Second Team All-Star while being voted the Most Improved Player and Best Playmaker in the OHL Eastern Conference Coaches Poll.
After being selected by the New York Islanders with the No. 5 pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, Strome returned to Niagara for the 2011-12 season and finished third on the team with 30 goals despite appearing in only 46 games. Strome scored seven goals and 23 points in the playoffs, leading Niagara to the OHL Final.
Strome returned to Niagara for the 2012-13 season and led the team with 60 assists and a plus-43 rating while scoring 34 goals. Following the season, Strome joined Bridgeport, the Islanders minor-league affiliate in the American Hockey League. In his professional debut, he recorded a goal on his first shot against Worcester on April 2, 2013, and added an assist in the same game, finishing with two goals and seven points in 10 games.
Strome started the 2013-14 season with Bridgeport and was leading the AHL in scoring with 33 points when he was called up to the Islanders. He made his NHL debut on Dec. 14, 2013 against the Montreal Canadiens. Strome scored his first career NHL goal - on the power play - on Jan. 6, 2014 in a 7-3 victory against the Dallas Stars.
In his first full season in the NHL in 2014-15, Strome scored 17 goals and 50 points in 81 games, adding two goals and four points in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Strome twice represented Canada at the World Junior Championship, winning a bronze medal in 2012.
