Sebastian Aho scores twice for Hurricanes in OT win

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sebastian Aho quietly is rounding into one of the top rookies in the NHL.
The 19-year-old scored his second goal of the game 1:34 into overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 win against the Boston Bruins at PNC Arena on Sunday.
Aho took a pass from Teuvo Teravainen at the top of the right faceoff circle and beat goalie Zane McIntyre past his blocker for his 10th goal. With four goals in his past five games, he has 23 points through 40 games.
"I felt like he was going to have a hot stick there, so I just gave him the puck," Teravainen said. "We think the game the same way, and we're trying to play fast and forecheck hard. When we work hard, we're going to get lots of loose pucks."

Derek Ryan and Jay McClement each had a goal, and Cam Ward made 32 saves in his 16th straight start for the Hurricanes (18-15-7), who are 11-1-1 in their past 13 home games.

McIntyre, making his third NHL start, had 26 saves for the Bruins (21-17-5), who extended their point streak against the Hurricanes to 12 games (7-0-5). Tim Schaller, David Backes and Brad Marchand scored for Boston.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead on a pretty goal by Schaller at 13:10 of the first period. He took Dominic Moore's pass on the forehand in the slot, spun to his backhand and scored with a shot along the ice. Riley Nash started the play by skating behind the net and stripping the puck from Ward.
Aho scored at 2:57 of the second period to tie the game 1-1. He fought his way to the front of the net and got a piece of defenseman Jaccob Slavin's shot. Aho, who is 5-foot-11, 172 pounds, pushed past big defenseman Brandon Carlo (6-5, 203) to gain position at the net.
"He's definitely a strong kid," said Slavin, who played a game-high 27:07 and blocked four shots. "In battling him in practice, he's super smart, but he does have some strength to him, and he uses it to his advantage."

Ryan's seventh goal put Carolina on top 2-1 at 14:28 of the second. He knocked down Bruins center David Krejci's pass in the neutral zone before taking a pass from Jordan Staal to finish a 2-on-1 under McIntyre's pads.
Backes tied it 2-2 at 5:49 of the third period when he popped in the rebound of Kevan Miller's shot from the left point.
McClement gave Carolina a 3-2 lead when he slipped Viktor Stalberg's centering pass between McIntyre's legs at 7:20.

The Bruins tied the game 3-3 at 7:43 after Patrice Bergeron caused a turnover behind the Carolina net and got the puck to Marchand for a quick shot from the left faceoff circle.
"We shortened our bench and tried to go with the guys that were really playing hard and doing a good job, and it brought us to overtime," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "Unfortunately, we were looking for that second point, but we didn't get it here."

Goal of the game

Teravainen and Aho were equally impressive on the overtime goal. Teravainen picked off a pass intended for Krejci, and Aho used Boston defenseman John-Michael Liles as a screen before launching a hard wrist shot.

Save of the game

The Bruins had a prime scoring chance in overtime when Bergeron and Marchand broke in on a 2-on-1. Bergeron made a late move to his backhand, but Ward stopped him with his right pad 26 seconds into the extra period.

Highlight of the game

Ward, on the left post, kicked out his left leg to stop Riley Nash's point-blank backhand shot at 13:30 of the second period, and then denied Nash on his own rebound.

Unsung performance of the game

During Boston's only power play, Staal had two shorthanded breakaways, but McIntyre denied him each time. McIntyre made a strong pad save when Staal tried to tuck a shot past him on the forehand at 16:06 of the second period, and then he got a piece of the second shot with his blocker at 16:23.

Need to know

Liles played 15:14 in his return to the Boston lineup after missing 20 games recovering from a concussion. ... Ryan, recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Nov. 11, has 13 points since Dec. 1 to lead the Hurricanes.
