Alex DeBrincat signed a seven-year, $91 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday. The contract has an average annual value of $13 million and begins next season.

DeBrincat is in the final season of a four-year, $31.5 million contract ($7.875 million average annual value) he signed with Detroit as a restricted free agent on July 9, 2023. He would have been an unrestricted free agent after this season.

The 28-year-old forward has eight points (four goals, four assists) for the Red Wings this season after getting two goals and an assist in a 5-4 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. Last season, DeBrincat had a career-high 85 points (41 goals, 44 assists) in 82 games.

A native of Farmington Hills, Michigan, DeBrincat was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round (No. 39) of the 2016 NHL Draft. He has 603 points (298 goals, 305 assists) in 702 games with the Blackhawks, Red Wings and Ottawa Senators and six points (two goals, four assists) in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The Red Wings have won just one of their first six games (1-3-2) after a tumultuous offseason in which captain Dylan Larkin requested a trade and general manager Steve Yzerman moved into a senior adviser role with assistant GM Shawn Horcoff becoming the interim GM. Defenseman Simon Edvinsson, a restricted free agent, has returned home to Sweden after initially reporting to training camp without a contract.

"Obviously, (there has been) a lot of noise on the outside, but in here, we're trying to stay close-knit and just like coming to the rink every day," DeBrincat said on Monday. "I think we've done a good job. Everyone's in good spirits, and we’re having fun."
