The Islanders fell 2-1 to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night, extending their winless streak to six games (0-4-2).
Brock Nelson scored the lone goal for the Islanders, reaching a team-high 18 goals on the season, but Shane Pinto, Claude Giroux (1 PPG, 1A) scored for the Senators. Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves in the loss. Cam Talbot (14 saves) earned the win despite exiting in the second period with a lower-body injury. Anton Forsberg stopped 21-of-22 in relief.

THE SCORING:
1st Period:
5:48 OTT 1, NYI 0 - After the Islanders kill off a power play, the Senators maintain possession in the Islanders zone. Claude Giroux receives a backdoor pass and fires a one-timer from the point, finding Shane Pinto, who pounces on the loose puck and opens the scoring. Jake Sanderson tallies the secondary assist.
2nd Period:
3:28 -OTT 2, NYI 0 PPG - Semyon Varlamov saves an initial shot by Ridly Greig, but Claude Giroux is there to bury the rebound, doubling the lead for the Senators. Sanderson picks up his second secondary assist of the night.
16:07 - OTT 2, NYI 1 - Brock Nelson wins a battle against the boards and passes the puck to Kyle Palmieri, who takes a one-timer saved by Forsberg. Nelson drives to the front of the net and buries the rebound to get the Islanders on the board, recording his team-leading 18th goal of the season in the process. Sebastian Aho records the secondary assist.

In his second NHL game, Samuel Bolduc had two shots, two hits, recording 18:07 TOI including some playing time on the power play unit... Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Alexander Romanov tied for a team high five shots... Semyon Varlamov made his third start since Dec. 17, turning away 36-of-38 but extending his personal winless streak to three games... The Islanders have not scored in the third period for 11 consecutive games... Matt Martin got into a fight with Austin Watson, marking his sixth fight of the year, reaching a team-total 14 on the season... The Islanders power play went 0-for-20 in their last eight games... Anton Forsberg relived Cam Talbot in the second period... Ridly Greig made his NHL debut with the Senators and picked up an assist.
GOALTENDING MATCHUP:
