Rapid Recap: Sabres 5, Islanders 3

The New York Islanders winless streak reached four games (0-3-1) as the Isles fell 5-3 to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday afternoon at KeyBank Center.
Mathew Barzal, Noah Dobson and Kieffer Bellows scored for the Islanders, who fell behind 4-1 after two periods and could not climb out of the three-goal hole.
Casey Middelstadt, Rasmus Dahlin, Tage Thompson, Vinnie Hinostroza and Jeff Skinner scored for the Sabres, who picked up their fourth-straight win.

THE SCORING:

1st Period:
12:11 - BUF 1, NYI 0 - Casey Middelstadt keeps, shoots and scores on a two-on-one rush to open the scoring. Kyle Okposo and Casey Fitzgerald pick up the assists.
17:09 - NYI 1, BUF 1 - Noah Dobson finds Mathew Barzal with a slap pass across the zone and Barzal makes no mistake, burying into the open net. Sebastian Aho picks up the secondary assist.
2nd Period:
1:17 - BUF 2, NYI 1 PPG - Rasmus Dahlin beats Ilya Sorokin with a slapper from the point, going stick side on the screened netminder. Jeff Skinner and Alex Tuch pick up the assists.
4:05- BUF 3, NYI 1 - Tage Thompson one times a Jacob Bryson pass high passed Sorokin for his team-leading 37th goal of the season. Victor Olofsson picks up the secondary assist.
12:48 - BUF 4, NYI 1 - Vinnie Hinostroza cuts to the net, takes a quick backhand feed from Anders Bjork, makes a quick move and goes high on Sorokin. Zemgus Girgensons picks up the secondary assist.
3rd Period:
8:45 - BUF 4, NYI 2- Noah Dobson skates end to end, before cutting across the net and roofing it past Tokarski.
10:22 - BUF 4, NYI 3 - Kieffer Bellows deflects a Ryan Pulock shot that trickles through Tokarski. Otto Koivula picks up the secondary assist on the play.
12:40 - BUF 5, NYI 3 - Jeff Skinner tucks a Thompson rebound in at the side of the net. Olofsson picks up the secondary assist.

NOTEBOOK:

JG Pageau (COVID-19) and Anthony Beauvillier (upper body) missed their second straight games... With a goal assist, Noah Dobson extended his point streak to three games (1G, 4A)... With a goal, Mathew Barzal extended his point streak to three games (1G, 2A)... The Islanders penalty kill allowed a goal for a fourth-straight game... Dobson's 12th goal of the season is the most for an Islanders defenseman in a decade.

GOALTENDING MATCHUP:

Ilya Sorokin stopped 30 of 35 in the loss.
Dustin Tokarski stopped 19 of 22 in the win, his third against the Islanders, which ranks for the most against any team in his NHL career.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The Islanders power play went 0-for-2.
The Islanders penalty kill went 5-for-6.
