The New York Islanders dropped their final game of the 2021-22 season with a 6-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday at UBS Arena.
JG Pageau opened the scoring 32 seconds into the game with his 18th goal of the season. The Islanders put up a pair of goals in the middle frame, as Kieffer Bellows and Josh Bailey allowed the Islanders to carry a 3-1 lead into the third period.
The Lightning retaliated with a five-goal final frame, stringing goals together from Corey Perry, Ryan McDonagh, Steven Stamkos, and Brandon Hagel in order to complete the comeback for Tampa Bay. Stamkos led the way with a hat trick, while Zdeno Chara scored the final goal for the Islanders this season, his second on the season.
With the loss, the Islanders' win streak came to an end at two games, as they finished the season with an overall record of 37-35-10 and a home record of 20-16-5.

THE SCORING:

1st Period:
0:32 - NYI 1, TBL 0 - Right off a faceoff win, Anders Lee handles the puck behind the net, sends it around the boards to find JG Pageau, who tips it past Vasilevskiy to get the Islanders on the board within a minute into the game.
11:57 - TBL 1, NYI 1 - Steven Stamkos ties the game with a deflection in front of the net to beat Sorokin, while extending his point streak to nine games. Erik Cernak and Ondrej Palat pick up the assists.
2nd Period:
9:35 - NYI 2, TBL 1 - The Islanders re-take the lead in the second period, as the puck bounces off Vasilevsky and Cal Foote and into the net, while Kieffer Bellows tumbles into the net in the process.
18:48 - NYI 3, TBL 1 PPG - Josh Bailey receives a cross-ice pass from Beauvillier and shoots it towards the net. The puck deflects off Mikhail Sergachev, trickling past Vasilevskiy to extend the Isles lead late in the second frame.
3rd Period:
1:21 - NYI 3, TBL 2 PPG - Corey Perry cuts New York's lead in half with a wrist shot to beat Sorokin on the power play. Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman record assists, while simultaneously extending their individual point streaks to nine games each.
10:10 - TBL 3, NYI 3 - Ryan McDonagh knots the game at three in the third frame, jamming the puck into the net through traffic. Pat Maroon and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare record the assists.
11:13 - TBL 4, NYI 3 - Tampa Bay gains their first lead of the matchup on Stamkos' second goal of the game, who blasts one past Sorokin to beat him glove-side. Ondrej Palat tallies his second assist of the night.
17:50 - TBL 5, NYI 3 - The Lightning pull away with the lead in the final minutes of the game with a goal from Stamkos, who races down the ice with Palat, sneaking one past Sorokin.
19:16 - TBL 5, NYI 4 - Zdeno Chara fires a laser through traffic to beat Vasilevsky glove-side, scoring his second goal of the season and his 209th goal of his career. UBS Arena erupts with cheers for the 45-year-old veteran.
19:35 - TBL 6, NYI 4 EN - The Lightning ice the game with a goal from Brandon Hagel, who buries the empty netter. Ryan McDonagh and Anthony Cirelli collect points with the assists.

NOTEBOOK:

Josh Bailey ended the season on a four game point streak (2G, 3A)... JG Pageau scored three goals in his last four games… Zach Parise skated in all 82 games this season, recording one assist, one shot and one blocked shot in 17:03 TOI in his 82nd game… Ryan Pulock rejoined the lineup and recorded four shots and one hit in 21:58... Sebastian Aho missed the game due to an upper body injury... The Islanders conclude their season with 84 points… Steven Stamkos extended his multi-point streak to nine games, shattering the record for the longest streak of multi-point games in franchise history… The Lightning finished the season with 110 points, securing third place in the Atlantic Division, as they are slated to face the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

GOALTENDING MATCHUP:

Ilya Sorokin stopped 28-of-33 in the loss.
Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 33-of-37 in the win.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The Islanders power play went a perfect 1-for-1, as their penalty kill went 0-for-1.
