The New York Islanders won for the third time in four tries after beating the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 at UBS Arena on Wednesday night.
Simon Holmstrom scored the game-winning goal with 10:03 to play in the third period, breaking open a 1-1 tie, while Sebastian Aho scored the other goal for the Islanders. Nikolaj Ehlers' power-play goal was the lone tally for the Jets.
With the win, the Islanders (67 points) remained in the first wild card position in the Eastern Conference, three points up on the Florida Panthers (65 points) and four up on the Pittsburgh Penguins (63 points), though the Penguins hold five games in hand.

17:35 - NYI 1, WPG 0 - Brock Nelson picks up a Mason Appleton turnover and kicks off a two-on-one rush the other way. Nelson keeps and shoots on the two-on-one, and Sebastian Aho jumps on the rebound after Connor Hellebuyck makes the initial stop.

      2nd Period:
      4:30 - NYI 1, WPG 1 PPG - Nikolaj Ehlers roofs a wrist shot up high on Ilya Sorokin, skating in from the top of the left circle and snapping a shot through traffic. Josh Morrissey and Kyle Connor with the assists.
      3rd Period:
      9:57 - NYI 2, WPG 1 - Simon Holmstrom takes a hit from Dylan DeMelo in the corner, but works the puck free to Bo Horvat. Horvat feeds Matt Martin, whose initial shot is stopped, but Horvat gets the puck back and feeds Holmstrom, who snipes top corner on Hellebuyck.
