NYI at CAR RR Header

The New York Islanders fell 2-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday night at PNC Arena, completing their three-game road trip with a record of 1-2-0.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored the lone goal for the Islanders, while Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Martinook found the back of the net for the Hurricanes. Ilya Sorokin started in back-to-back games and made 33 saves in the loss. The Islanders tested Frederik Andersen with 22 shots on goal, in which he made 21 saves.
The Islanders did not lose their possession of the first wild card in the Eastern Conference, but the chasing three teams are closing in.
Pittsburgh Penguins (86 points, 77 games played) defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 to jump back into the second wild card spot on Sunday, while the Florida Panthers (85 points, 77 games played) and the Buffalo Sabres (81 points, 75 games played) were both idle.
The Islanders have a one-point lead over the Penguins, though Pittsburgh has one game in-hand. However, the Isles have 39 regulation wins while the Pens have 38, which is the determining factor in the case of a tie.

THE SCORING:
1st Period:
17:33 - NYI 1, CAR 0 - Pierre Engvall breaks into the Hurricanes zone with speed, finds Jean-Gabriel Pageau, who rips a shot at the dot high on Frederik Andersen to open the scoring for New York. Scott Mayfield tallies the secondary assist.

2nd Period:
9:27 - NYI 1, CAR 1 - Jesperi Kotkaniemi cuts in toward the crease and takes a shot, which trickles past Sorokin to tie the game at one apiece. Jesse Puljujarvi and Stefan Noesen record assists.
3rd Period:
2:31 - CAR 2, NYI 1 - Jordan Martinook rushes down the ice with Sebastian Aho on a 2-on-1, wristing a hard shot past Sorokin to take the first lead of the night for Carolina. Jaccob Slavin collects the sole assist.
NOTEBOOK:
Ilya Sorokin started in back-to-back nights for the third time this season... Sebastian Aho played in his first game since Mar. 18, drawing a minor penalty and taking three shots in 16:49 TOI in his return from injury... Josh Bailey slotted into the lineup for the first time since Mar. 25 and skated 13:36... Simon Holmstrom and Alexander Romanov were both scratches...
