The New York Islanders fell 2-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday night at PNC Arena, completing their three-game road trip with a record of 1-2-0.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored the lone goal for the Islanders, while Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Martinook found the back of the net for the Hurricanes. Ilya Sorokin started in back-to-back games and made 33 saves in the loss. The Islanders tested Frederik Andersen with 22 shots on goal, in which he made 21 saves.
The Islanders did not lose their possession of the first wild card in the Eastern Conference, but the chasing three teams are closing in.
Pittsburgh Penguins (86 points, 77 games played) defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 to jump back into the second wild card spot on Sunday, while the Florida Panthers (85 points, 77 games played) and the Buffalo Sabres (81 points, 75 games played) were both idle.
The Islanders have a one-point lead over the Penguins, though Pittsburgh has one game in-hand. However, the Isles have 39 regulation wins while the Pens have 38, which is the determining factor in the case of a tie.
