Season series: The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames are meeting for the first time this pre-season with split-squad games going simultaneously in each city. Calgary will host Edmonton at Scotiabank Saddledome in one split-squad game, while the Oilers will welcome the Flames at Rogers Place in the other.

Flames team scope: Goaltender Brian Elliott will start in Calgary to mark his pre-season debut with the Flames. Elliott was acquired from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Calgary's second round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft and a conditional third round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Elliott, 31, went 23-8-6 with a 2.07 GAA and .930 save percentage in 42 games with St. Louis. Matthew Tkachuk, the No. 6 pick in 2016, will also dress for the Flames, as will Troy Brouwer, who was signed as a free agent on July 1st. Centre Sam Bennett will dress and is expected to skate on a line with Brouwer and Tkachuk.

Oilers team scope: Forward Nail Yakupov, the first overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, could headline the roster Edmonton sends for the split-squad game in Calgary. Defencemen Griffin Reinhart and Darnell Nurse, both first round picks from their respective draft classes, could also play in Calgary. Forward Greg Chase, who spent parts of five seasons with the Calgary Hitmen, could also suit up at Scotiabank Saddledome -- his former home rink. Chase, 21, had 60 goals and 177 points in 219 career games with the Hitmen.
