After a life threating illness to his newborn daughter Charlie, Travis also made a sizeable donation to the Alberta Children's Hospital during their annual Caring for Kids Radiothon. These funds will be used to purchase much needed medical equipment. On top of the donation, he wanted to also thank the nurses and doctors who treated Charlie by donating his personal tickets for the remainder of the Flames season.
Despite still being relatively new to the city and the organization, it has not prevented Hamonic from being courteous with his time and bringing immense passion to the hockey club, community, and the Calgary Flames Foundation with unparalleled eagerness and enthusiasm.
Without question, Travis has embraced being a role model with great pride and responsibility and through his commitment to the organization and as a community leader. The Calgary Flames are pleased to present the 2019 Ralph and Sonia Scurfield Humanitarian Award to Travis Hamonic.
The Scurfield Family devoted their time to the community and were a very important part in bringing the Flames to Calgary. Sonia was a philanthropist, community leader and business woman whose legacy will be carried on with her children. Sonia is the only Canadian woman to have her name engraved on the Stanley Cup, an accomplishment she achieved as co-owner when the Flames captured the Cup in 1989. Sonia was the wife of prominent Calgary businessman Ralph Scurfield Sr., co-owner of the Calgary Flames, who was tragically lost in a heli-skiing accident. He was recognized as a leader in the Calgary business community and a builder of the University of Calgary business programs. Mr. Scurfield was a true supporter of all sports, and a believer in community involvement.
In recognition of those roles and in memory of Ralph and Sonia Scurfield the co-owners of the Calgary Flames established the Ralph and Sonia Scurfield Humanitarian Award, which is presented annually to a Calgary Flames player.
