Recap: Ducks Win Freeway Faceoff Opener 5-4 in Shootout

Four different Ducks scored and Kevin Shattenkirk buried the shootout-winner, leading Anaheim to victory in the first Freeway Faceoff of the year, a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Kings tonight at Staples Center.

Shattenkirk, Troy Terry, Cam Fowler and Isac Lundestrom scored for Anaheim.
The game remained scoreless through the opening 20 minutes thanks to a sterling performance by Gibson, who turned aside 18 Kings shots in the first period.
Ryan Getzlaf left the game in the initial period after an awkward collision along the boards and did not return. Getzlaf leads the Ducks in assists (19) and ranks second in points (1-19=20).
Anaheim picked up the pace early in the middle frame, with several quality scoring chances early in the period, but Kings netminder Jonathan Quick matched Gibson, keeping the Ducks from taking the night's first lead.
The Ducks finally broke through midway through the second. After an unsuccessful Anaheim power play, Terry grabbed a loose puck in the corner and worked his way to the slot, lifting a shot over Quick's shoulder to put Anaheim ahead.

Terry has goals in two of his last three games (2-0=2). The 24-year-old winger leads Anaheim in scoring (14-10=24) and goals, and ranks second in assists.
The lead was short-lived though as a bad bounce ended up in the back of Anaheim's net. Viktor Arvidsson circled behind the Ducks goal, looking for a centering pass before finding Alex Iafallo in front of the net. Iafallo quickly tapped Arvidsson's pass towards the goal, where it bounced off Jamie Drysdale's skate and past Gibson, evening the game at one.
The Ducks reclaimed the lead before the end of the middle frame on Shattenkirk's fifth goal of the season. The veteran defenseman scooped up a Kings neutral zone turnover and attacked the offensive end while his teammates went for a line change behind him. Shattenkirk proved to not need any assistance, using Kings defender Matt Roy as a screen and burying a wrist shot over Quick's glove for a 2-1 Ducks edge.

With 15 points on the season, Shattenkirk matched his offensive output from his first campaign in Anaheim in 32 fewer games.
Taking a two-goal lead into the third period, the Ducks came out flying in the final stanza, scoring two quick goals for a commanding 4-1 advantage.
Afforded an early power play, Anaheim first capitalized on the man advantage, courtesy of a clean passing play in the Los Angeles zone. The puck eventually found Adam Henrique in the right faceoff circle, who put it on a tee for Fowler at the point. Fowler's shot was deflected by Kings forward Trevor Moore, changing direction and beating Quick for Fowler's third power-play goal of the season.

The 12th-year Duck is tied for second among NHL defenseman in power-play points (3-7=10) and power-play goals.
The Ducks struck again 29 seconds later, getting a unique bounce of their own to end up in the back of the net. Lundestrom took the puck to the net, forcing Quick to make a right pad save. The rebound carromed directly to Alex Edler just above the goal crease, where it bounced off the veteran defender and over the goal line, putting the Ducks ahead 4-1 with 17 minutes to play in regulation.

The Kings would not go quietly though as the home team went on the attack to pull back within two. Adrian Kempe scored the goal, redirecting a point shot past Gibson.
Seconds later, it appeared Los Angeles had matched Anaheim's back-to-back goals with consecutive tallies of their own, but Carl Grundstrom was ruled to have played the puck with a high stick, nullifying what briefly appeared to be the Kings' third goal of the evening.
The Ducks would not be able to take advantage of the good fortune though, as the Kings scored twice 26 seconds apart to tie the game at four.
Iafallo notched the first on a play that looked like a carbon copy of LA's second goal, tipping home a shot from the right point. Dustin Brown tied the game on the next shift, lofting a rebound bid over Gibson's pad from the side of the net.
Anaheim came inches from the game-winning goal with a minute to play in overtime when Fowler's backhand bid beat Quick but rang off the post and stayed out of the net.
Shattenkirk and Trevor Zegras scored in the shootout for Anaheim. Gibson turned aside two-of-three Kings shooters to earn the win.
The Ducks get right back to work tomorrow with the second half of a back-to-back, hosting the Vegas Golden Knights at Honda Center. Tickets are on sale now.
