BOSTON - The National Hockey League announced today, February 1, that Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron has been named the NHL second star for the month of January.
Bergeron skated in all 11 of the team's January games, recording nine goals and eight assists for 17 points with a plus-nine rating. His nine goals ranked second in the NHL, his 17 points were tied for fourth-most in the NHL, and his plus-nine rating was tied for fourth-best in the NHL over that span. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound centerman recorded two hat tricks this month, becoming the first Bruins player with multiple hat tricks in a season since Bill Guerin had two in the 2001-02 season. Bergeron tied the franchise record for goals in a game with his four-goal, one assist effort in the team's 7-1 victory over Carolina on January 6. On January 18, he earned his second hat trick of the year and the third of his career in the team's 5-2 win in Brooklyn. The four-time Frank J. Selke Trophy winner also ranked fifth in the NHL with 141 faceoff wins (58.3 FOW%). Bergeron's play helped lead the Bruins to a 8-1-2 record in the month of January, tied for the most points (18) in the league.
In his 14th NHL season, all with the Bruins, the 32-year-old L'Ancienne Lorette, Quebec native ranks third on the team in scoring with 20 goals and 22 assists for 42 points in 43 games. His plus-23 rating is tied for fifth in the NHL while his 530 faceoff wins rank ninth in the league.
