BOSTON -
After saying following Monday's practice
that he was considering playing Jack Studnicka on the wing against the Senators, coach Bruce Cassidy confirmed that the 22-year-old will indeed play the right side on Boston's third line on Tuesday night.
Studnicka will join Jake DeBrusk and Erik Haula to give the trio a different look as the Bruins open a quick two-game homestand at TD Garden.

"He's put on some weight, so he should be able to handle the rigors of the wall work a little more," said Cassidy. "Just talking to Jack in training camp, I think he just wants to play on the Bruins, wherever it is. He still has to create offense when he has an opportunity, move his feet, win pucks, make good decisions on his forehand, shoot the puck.
"That doesn't change, center or wing. On the wing, tighter spaces, better on the walls, defensive zone coverage assignments are a little different. Just help that line find its footing. It's had its moments, just hasn't broken through. Maybe Jack gives them a little different dimension than a [Curtis] Lazar or [Karson] Kuhlman."
Lazar will shift down to play the right wing on Boston's fourth line with Trent Frederic and Tomas Nosek, reuniting a trio that saw extended time together during training camp. Karson Kuhlman will be a healthy scratch.

Opposing View

The Senators come to town a bit shorthanded with a number of players in COVID-19 protocol, including forwards Connor Brown and Dylan Gambrell and defenseman Nick Holden. As a result, forward Egor Sokolov was recalled from Belleville (AHL) and will make his NHL debut.
Per coach D.J. Smith, defenseman Victor Mete's status is also in question as he awaits further testing.
Ottawa has dropped four straight games entering Tuesday night's contest and is 3-7-1 on the season. Winger Drake Batherson paces the Sens with 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 11 games this season, while Josh Norris leads the club with six goals.
Defenseman Thomas Chabot is the Sens' anchor on the back end, as he leads the team in time on ice with an average of 26:17 per game.
In goal, Matt Murray and Anton Forsberg have split time with four games a piece so far this season. Smith said on Tuesday morning he was not yet ready to divulge which netminder would get the call against the Bruins.
"They play hard. I think D.J. Smith wants a team that's hard to play against," said Cassidy. "Obviously they're not where they need to be with experience in those close games. Seems like a team that's still learning how to play with the lead, win, close out games, or stay in games if it's not going their way. There's still growing pains.
"I think they're going through some different goaltending challenges as well. Once they square those away, it makes your team better automatically. But good young talent, play hard. I don't know what to expect tonight. I know they have a few younger guys in the lineup because they got hit with COVID a little bit."

A Familiar Foe

Mike Reilly spent parts of two seasons with the Senators - just 70 games - but said he has nothing but fond memories of his time with Ottawa and delivered particularly high praise for Smith and how the Senators coach helped grow his game.
"Nothing but great things to say about Ottawa and my time there," said Reilly. "D.J. Smith was awesome to me. They have a really good group of guys there. They're young but I think D.J. Smith is trying to build a culture there. It was great to be a part of and still pretty close with a lot of guys on the team. I'm glad I had a stop there. It helped my game out a lot."
Tuesday night's matchup also marks the first meeting between the Bruins and Senators at TD Garden since Nov. 2, 2019 and first overall since Dec. 9, 2019.
