VANCOUVER - The Bruins, looking to build off two consecutive strong efforts against Nashville and Tampa Bay, will receive a boost on Wednesday night as leading scorer Brad Marchand rejoins the lineup following his three-game suspension. The winger, who was banned for slew-footing Vancouver's Oliver Ekman-Larsson on Nov. 28 at TD Garden, will make his return against the Canucks during the opener of Boston's three-game swing through Western Canada.

"It will be a big boost for our club," said assistant coach Joe Sacco, who will remain in charge of the bench for the road trip with Bruce Cassidy still in COVID-19 protocol. "He's one of our leaders, not only on the ice but off the ice. He brings so many things to our team. He plays in all situations, power play, penalty, 4-on-4, 3-on-3, plays in every situation. It's obviously a big boost. It's good for our club to have him back tonight."

Opposing View

The Canucks and Bruins squared off just 10 days ago at TD Garden - a 3-2 comeback win for Boston powered by Marchand's monster effort - but Vancouver looks quite different after the firing of coach Travis Green and general manager Jim Benning on Sunday.
Veteran coach Bruce Boudreau was hired to take over behind the bench and guided the Canucks to a spirited 4-0 win over the L.A. Kings on Monday night at Rogers Arena.
"They have a new coach, they're going to have a certain amount of energy here tonight, I'm sure," said Sacco. "That happens all the time when someone comes in new. They played a very good game against LA; we watched some of their game…but as far as the systems go, we'll take a look and see if they're doing anything different than the last time we played them.
"We'll make the adjustments that we need to make accordingly, and we'll worry about our game. We're trying to build our game. We know it's going to be a tough game here tonight in this building. Bruce seems to have them playing fast right now, seems like he wants to be a little bit quicker. But it will be a good challenge for us tonight."

On the Mend

Charlie McAvoy will also be back in the lineup on Wednesday night after sitting out Boston's overtime loss to Tampa with a non-COVID-related illness. Charlie Coyle and Matt Grzelcyk, who missed practice this week with non-COVID illnesses of their own, are expected to be in the lineup. Tomas Nosek (non-COVID illness) remains in Boston and is unavailable against the Canucks.
With McAvoy returning, Jack Ahcan will be a healthy scratch. Karson Kuhlman will also be a scratch with Oskar Steen subbing in as the fourth-line right wing alongside Jake DeBrusk and Curtis Lazar.

Feeling at Home

Lazar will be playing with some extra juice on Wednesday night - for a few reasons. In addition to playing in his native province, the 26-year-old will return to his natural center position while aiming to build off his strong performance against the Lightning on Saturday, which included a nifty backhanded tally for his first goal of the season.
"It's definitely in the back of mind. I was happy with how I played that entire Tampa game," said Lazar. "As with any player, confidence is a great thing. You want to catch that in stride and continue to build your game individually and that's something I look forward to. Great road trip, great opportunity for us here. Looking forward to going out there and making a difference."
Lazar has played wing for most of this season but has been a center for the majority of his career, including when he came to the Bruins from Buffalo at the trade deadline last spring.
"Center is an easy adjustment as that's my natural position," said Lazar. "Taking the reps in practice the last couple days, you feel at home. Still trying to get used to the wing here and there, but all in all - everything is so situational on the ice, you're changing position, the game happens so fast.
"I definitely am comfortable down the middle so I'm looking forward to controlling the play a little bit more in the D-zone and getting more involved."
The native of Salmon Arm, B.C. - roughly a seven-hour drive from Vancouver - is also eager to get this road trip underway as the B's make their way through some familiar territory.
"We're not out of the woods with COVID and whatnot, so it's kind of hard to see family and friends but anytime you're back close to home, it's special," said Lazar. "It's been a few years since I was able to play against the Canucks - they're the team I grew up cheering for and watching. It's always a game I've got marked on my calendar, so I'm looking forward to going out there and putting on a show."

  • Jeremy Swayman will make the start between the pipes.
  • Anton Blidh was a full participant in morning skate and, per Sacco, "is getting closer" to returning from an upper-body injury that has forced him to miss the last three games.
