Media Day Notebook: Krug Skates, Bergeron Day to Day, Subban Claimed

BOSTON- The Bruins held their annual Media Day to kick off the season on Tuesday at Warrior Ice Arena. Prior to speaking with media, the team hit the ice for a routine practice.
Torey Krug was a welcome addition to the ice on Tuesday morning. The defenseman spent the past couple of weeks sidelined after he took a puck to the jaw on Sept. 19 in a preseason game. He is now wearing a shield with his helmet to protect his jaw.
Krug did not take contact during the skate, as it marked his first practice back with the team since the injury.

Twenty-five players participated in practice. The B's need to get their roster down to 23 before submitting the Opening Night Roster to the League.
Krug can be placed on Injured Reserve, so one cut is forthcoming prior to Wednesday's deadline to submit the roster. While Krug hasn't been ruled out for Thursday's home opener against the Nashville Predators at TD Garden, General Manager Don Sweeney said on Tuesday that it is unlikely Krug will play.
"We'll have at least one more roster decision to make before we submit it [on Wednesday]," Sweeney said Tuesday during a press conference with Bruins ownership, management, along with Head Coach Bruce Cassidy. "Just going through the last decisions; sometimes they are the hardest. Some of the players have made life difficult for what this lineup looks like Thursday night, and that's a good thing."
Players still around for Tuesday's practice included young defensemen Matt Grzelcyk and Rob O'Gara, along with rookies Anders Bjork and Jake DeBrusk.

Bergeron Day to Day

Patrice Bergeron was on the ice for practice, but left before the skate concluded.
"He left early today - we'll classify it as day-to-day for now," said Cassidy. "I think that's accurate, and we'll see where he's at [on Wednesday]. We'll have a much better update then. I mean, I don't want to speculate."
"It's a lower body injury, and from there, I guess I'd say I don't expect it to be long term," said Cassidy. "I honestly can't tell you; we'll see how he is in the morning."
"I mean, it's day to day, so yeah, but it's fine," Bergeron told reporters during Media Day after practice.
Bergeron said that the day-to-day situation does not have anything to do with the surgery he underwent at the start of the offseason.

Subban Claimed

In needing to get down to the 23-man roster, the Bruins placed Malcolm Subban on waivers Monday. On Tuesday, he was claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights.
Subban has been part of the Bruins' organization since he was drafted 24th overall in 2012.
"Am I surprised? I think Malcolm has taken a step, and I'm not surprised in the situation," said Sweeney. "Vegas is doing what they're trying to build. Obviously Zane [McIntyre] had experience last year, had a very good run. Daniel [Vladar] probably, if Malcolm does stay there, will get an opportunity to back up in Providence and get the exposure there at the next level."
"It's disappointing. We've had a lot of time invested in Malcolm, and we are seeing him grow as a person on and off the ice. It's a loss for our hockey club. The system is in place for a reason."
