Tarasenko leads Blues to improbable win against Oilers

Down 3-2 with less than 30 seconds left on the clock and playing shorthanded due to a tripping penalty called on Pavel Buchnevich, the St. Louis Blues needed someone to be the hero on Thursday night.
Enter Vladimir Tarasenko.

With just over 20 seconds left on the clock in regulation, Jordan Kyrou fed a pass from behind the net to Tarasenko in the slot, who buried a game-tying goal to force overtime and help the Blues to an eventual 4-3 shootout victory.
Surprisingly, the goal was the first shorthanded goal of Tarasenko's NHL career. It also was just the fourth time in franchise history the Blues have scored a shorthanded goal with under a minute left in regulation to tie a game.

League wide, a shorthanded goal has been scored in the final 20 seconds to tie a game only 13 times in NHL history, with the Blues scoring the last two (Nov. 3, 2021 against LA and Thursday at Edmonton).
"You could feel the excitement from the boys on the bench," said Jordan Binnington, who made 24 saves and also denied Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in the shootout. "It's one of those wins we remember moving forward."
