Admittedly a Toronto Maple Leafs fan through and through, Lawny spends most of his time in his hospital bed watching hockey.
"Big (hockey fan)," he told stlouisblues.com. "I would watch hockey from the time I get up in the morning until I go to bed, seven days a week if I could."
Because a majority of the St. Louis Blues' players are Canadian-born, Lawny adopted the Blues as his team when the Maple Leafs' season ended.
On Saturday, Lawny was in the hospital's front lobby when Lindsay native Vince Dunn passed by in an impromptu hometown parade and walked in to hand him the Stanley Cup. Dunn, who was on his way to a public appearance at the Lindsay Recreational Complex, heard of Lawny's story from his mother, Tracy, who previously worked at Ross Memorial Hospital.
"Just pretty emotional," Lawny said, tears welling up in his eyes. "Thank you very much, Vince. It means a lot."
