RECAP: Blackhawks Fall Late to League-Leading Hurricanes, 4-3

The Blackhawks jumped out to an early lead over the Hurricanes for the second straight meeting, but fell late to the NHL's hottest team in a 4-3 game. Chicago fell to 1-8-2, while Carolina improved to 9-0-0 to start the year.
Alex DeBrincat scored a pair on the night and Patrick Kane added his fifth of the season in the loss. Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves in his third straight start.

STAT OF THE NIGHT: A night after climbing to third all-time in a pair of franchise categories, Kane tied Bobby Hull for fourth all-time in games played at 1,036. Stan Mikita, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook are the only players to appear in more games.
BLACKHAWK OF THE GAME: With a goal, a primary assist and a team-high eight shots, Kane remained red hot after returning from COVID-19 Protocol.

1st - 1:35 - Alex DeBrincat (Patrick Kane, Seth Jones)

Chicago got off to another quick start against the Canes for the second game in a row. Breaking out of his own zone, Patrick Kane flipped a puck into the neutral zone that Andrei Svechnikov got a glove on, but ended up knocking with in the path of Alex DeBrincat at the Carolina blue line. The winger walked in alone and put it low blocker side on Frederik Andersen for a 1-0 advantage.

1st - 6:25 - Derek Stepan (Tony DeAngelo, Andrei Svechnikov)

The Hurricanes answered a few minutes later as Andrei Svechnikov circled behind the Blackhawks net and found a hard-charging Tony DeAngelo in the slot. DeAngelo whiffed on his one-time bid, but got just enough on the puck to redirect it over to Derek Stepan at the far side of the net for a tap-in tally and a 1-1 score.

2nd - 2:49 - Patrick Kane (Riley Stillman, MacKenzie Entwistle)

Patrick Kane continued his scoring touch in the second period, tipping home his fifth of the season for a 2-1 lead. Off a 3-on-2 rush, Kane's feed for Alex DeBrincat was just out of reach and redirected off the boards in the corner to MacKenzie Entwistle just above the dot. Entwistle moved the puck back to Riley Stillman at the point for a quick shot that Kane got a stick on while driving through the slot to redirect it between the legs of Frederik Andersen to regain the lead.

2nd - 8:24 - Alex DeBrincat (Philipp Kurashev, Mike Hardman)

The Blackhawks opened a two-goal lead near the game's midpoint off a turnover in the neutral zone. Mike Hardman forced Carolina's Brady Skjei to cough up the puck at his own blue line and then went towards goal with Skjei in an abbreviated 1-on-1. The rookie forward pulled up to hit late-trailing Philipp Kurashev while falling, who then quickly found Alex DeBrincat across the slot with a backhander for a 3-1 score.

2nd - 12:50 - Seth Jarvis (Derek Stepan)

Carolina answered on a break of their own later in the period. Seth Jones shot in the offensive zone was blocked in front by Derek Stepan, who quickly sprung Seth Jarvis on a breakaway the opposite way. Jarvis slipped a shot between the legs of a sprawling Marc-Andre Fleury to cut the Chicago lead to 3-2.

3rd - 0:17 - Jesper Fast (Andrei Svechnikov, Jaccob Slavin)

Seconds into the third period it was a tie game as Jesper Fast found the net on the opening rush. Andrei Svechnikov walked across the blue line and dished a short saucer to Fast in the slot, where the winger put a shot just over the pad of Marc-Andre Fleury for a 3-3 score.

3rd - 3:26 - Martin Necas (Sebastian Aho, Ethan Bear)

The Hurricanes took their first lead of the night a short time later as Martin Necas walked in off an offensive zone cycle and put the puck on net through traffic. His shot squeaked between the legs of Marc-Andre Fleury and in for a 4-3 Carolina lead.
