Wild rally falls short in Traverse City

The Carolina Hurricanes scored three times in the first period in a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild at the second day of competition in the NHL Prospect Tournament in Traverse City, Mich. on Saturday.
Alex Tuch and Zach Schroeder scored third-period goals for the Wild. Tuch capitalized on a breakaway, beating Hurricanes goaltender Callum Booth with a deke and forehand snap shot into the upper right corner with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.
Schroeder scored off the rush on a shot through traffic with the extra attacker on the ice and 16.5 seconds remaining.

Minnesota outshot Carolina 29-24 in the game, including a 21-10 margin over the final 40 minutes. Iowa coach Derek Lalonde, who is serving as the head coach in Traverse City, said he was pleased with his club's effort after falling behind early, putting together two strong periods to finish the game.
Carolina outshot the Wild 14-8 in the first period and converted three of those chances on goals by Valentin Zykov, Warren Foegele and Steven Lorentz to take a sizable lead into the first intermission.
"Obviously not the start we wanted," Lalonde said. "Disappointing in, again structurally, we weren't that bad. We just had some really big blow-up mistakes that ended up in the back of our goal and we find ourselves down 3-0."
Zykov and Foegele scored on back-to-back shifts midway through the period as the Hurricanes picked up momentum.
The Wild came out firing in the second but could not capitalize. Minnesota had a 13-7 shots advantage in the period and pushed hard for a goal but could not find a way to get the puck past Booth.
After one such push, Carolina's Andrew Poturalski scored off the rush to extend Carolina's lead to 4-0 at 9:39.
"A real credit to the guys, down 3-0, the way they responded," Lalonde said. "We played a very good second, probably the best period we've had in the tournament so far and came out of it down a goal."
Goaltender Adam Vay made 20 saves for the Wild, who dropped to 0-2 in the tournament. Minnesota will be off Sunday before a game against the New York Rangers at 2 p.m. CST on Monday.
Lalonde said he will continue with his rotation in goal against the Rangers, meaning Steve Michalek will get the start. Vay will go again on Tuesday against an undetermined opponent.
"I've been happy with both goalies," Lalonde said. "Hopefully they can keep performing at a high level."
The day off comes at a good time for Minnesota which played without defenseman Gustav Olofsson on Saturday after he left Friday's tournament opener with a knee injury and without forward Sam Anas for two periods on Saturday after he was hit high by Hurricanes defenseman Tyler Ganly.
Anas remained on the ice momentarily before leaving with the assistance of a trainer. Lalonde said Anas will go through the concussion protocol and is unlikely to play again in the tournament.
Olofsson is also unlikely to return in Traverse City.
