Player Pets: Cam Talbot & Winnie
Winnie is an 11-year-old Lab Greyhound Mix

TS: How many pets do you have, and what breed are they?
CT:We just have one dog. We rescued her, so the vets best guess is that she is a Lab Greyhound Mix.
TS: How old is Winnie?
CT: She just turned 11 years old last month.
TS: Did you rescue her when she was a puppy?
CT: Yeah, she was only 12 weeks old when we rescued her.
TS: How was the name Winnie decided?
CT: That was her name when we rescued her and we didn't want to change it up on her, so we just kept it. It was cute.
TS: How is it been moving with a dog?
CT: Well, we have pretty much only been in cold weather climates, so we haven't really had to deal with the heat too much. She was always good, the only thing that made it a little tougher is you can't fly with her, so driving from Ontario to New York wasn't bad, that was only eight hours. But Ontario to Edmonton, we made that drive about four or five times, 35-hour trips made it a little tougher. And it makes it tougher to find hotels because obviously they all have to be pet friendly. She made it a little bit more difficult traveling, but we love her so we did it. When we had kids, we just decided to stay put in Edmonton and we stayed there for three years straight.
TS: Do you have any favorite moment or favorite thing that you or your kids like to do with her?
CT: Actually, we had to give her to my dad because my son is allergic to her. We find out about a year-and-a-half ago. They were pretty young when she was around. When they were born and they was playing on their blankets and things like that, it was always cute. If anyone went near the twins, Winnie would just go lay in front of them, almost like she was protecting them. That's like the only real story I have with the kids, they didn't really get a chance to play with her because they were so young before we had to give her up. Luckily, my dad still has her, she's in the family still. So we see her when we go home in the summer, but she was always kind of their protector when they were little, that was cute to see her have that maternal instinct.
TS: Did you grow up with any pets?
CT: We had a family dog. She was a Bichon, just like a little eight-pound fluffy white thing. More like a cat, she slept on top of couches and stuff like that. She wasn't really a bigger dog like Winnie, but she was our family dog for eight or nine years when I was younger.
TS: If you could describe Winnie in one word, what would it be?
CT: Playful. She was always so high-energy and anytime you take her outside, it was play, play, play when she was a puppy. Even now, she's 11 years old and she has so much energy. All she wants to do is go outside and go for walks, she's always so playful.
TS: How often do you see her these days?
CT: Just when we go home in the offseason. My dad's got her and he lives about 20 minutes from us, so anytime he comes to our place, he'll bring her and she kind of just stays outside because kids bring their blankets and her fur gets everywhere and stuff like that. If my son gets any of that on his blanket, he's all stuffed up for a day or two. He's pretty bad when it comes to her, so we try to keep them separated unfortunately.
