Hunt, a native of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, has done a lot of traveling during his NHL career.
After going undrafted and playing four seasons with Bemidji State from 2008-12, Hunt signed with Chicago of the American Hockey League, where his coach was Craig MacTavish. When MacTavish became general manager of the Edmonton Oilers in April 2013, he brought Hunt with him, signing the defenseman to a two-year contract on July 6, 2013. He bounced between the Oilers and the AHL for three seasons before being signed as a free agent by the St. Louis Blues on July 2, 2016, then was claimed on waivers by the Nashville Predators on Jan. 17, 2017.

Hunt was on the move again six months later, signing as a free agent with the expansion Vegas Golden Knights in July 2017. Hunt got his first chance to play regularly with the Golden Knights, finishing with 18 points (three goals, 15 assists). But after playing 13 games with Vegas in 2018-19, Hunt was on the move again, this time to the Minnesota Wild, who acquired him in a trade on Jan. 21, 2019.
