TUSK TALK: Sunday Showdown

As the Mammoth host the Boston Bruins, learn more about the storylines for tonight's game!

MORNING SKATE NOTES

  • The Mammoth did not hold morning skate with the 5:00 p.m. start time; however, the team had a practice Saturday. All expected players participated except forward Brandon Tanev, who took a maintenance day.
  • Utah enters Sunday’s game with a 2-0-0 record at home. Boston is 1-2-0 on the road this season.

Game Plan

Part of Boston’s game is clogging up the neutral zone and defensive zone to limit their opponent’s possession time and ability to generate offense. Head coach André Tourigny discussed how Utah needs to counteract this part of the Bruins game.

“The way Boston plays, they clog the middle in their zone, they clog the neutral zone a lot. So, it’ll be a different style of game. It’s tough to generate speed against that team and the common theme is you need to work off the forecheck. Because the way they clog the neutral zone, that will be the way to generate possession and attack, quick strike and loose puck recovery, that kind of stuff. That is what we need to be focused on.”

Back-to-Back

The Bruins enter tonight’s game on the second half of a back-to-back. Tourigny discussed facing teams in this situation:

“First, you need to play you’re A game,” Tourigny said. “That’s the first thing you need to establish. You need to go out there and establish your game, your identity, the way you want to play, especially early in the year. But even through the year, you need to play your game. Then from there, obviously you know they will play four lines, you know they will do those kind of things. Sometimes you can take some decisions behind the bench to try to take advantage of (the fact that) they might be tired or so forth. But if you look at the push Calgary had in the third period, even if they were on the back-to-back, so you can’t take that for granted in the NHL and you will get an NHL effort from the other team.”

Refocus and Reset

When the Mammoth have gone through a stretch of play that they haven’t liked, the group has refocused and come back stronger. This resiliency is something the team has established early. Veteran defenseman Nate Schmidt discussed this on Saturday:

“I love how we’ve approached a period that we didn’t like,” Schmidt shared. “I feel that energy in the room of not being ok with it, but also knowing that it’s happening, and having the awareness that we need to have a turnaround period. I think that’s a big step for a team to make. It’s one thing to do it once, twice, it’s another to do it repetitively.”

Keep Improving

As the Mammoth enter the sixth game of the regular season, it’s all about building off the improvements they’ve made as a group.

“82 games, it’s a race for improvement,” Tourigny explained. “We’re far from the finish line; we need to improve. We have stuff we do improve. I’m proud of the focus of the guys, the way they commit to what we have to do. You can see in our last two games how much our inside game improved, the quickness of our offense, our breakout improved, our forecheck improved. So now we need to keep going. We’re not there yet, but we’re in better shape.”

THE PREVIEW:

Sunday’s Showdown:

Utah

  • The Mammoth enter Sunday evening’s game with two straight wins at home to start a four-game homestand. Through these games, Utah has shown its resiliency, ability to ride momentum waves, and a strong defensive effort.
  • In Utah’s most recent win, a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks, Nick Schmaltz’s hat trick powered the team to their first six goal game of the season. It was the first home hat trick in franchise history and the second of Schmaltz’s career. Liam O’Brien scored his first goal as a Mammoth while Clayton Keller and Michael Carcone scored their first goals of the season.
  • Schmaltz leads the team with three goals and seven points. He is tied with Clayton Keller for the team lead with four assists. Karel Vejmelka has played four of the Mammoth’s first five games and has a 3-1-0 record. He has a 2.00 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.
  • Utah’s final game of this four-game homestand is Tuesday night when the Mammoth host the Colorado Avalanche for a Central Division matchup.

Boston

  • The Bruins are on the second half of a back-to-back when they face the Mammoth Sunday night. In the front half, Boston fell 4-1 to the Colorado Avalanche in Denver. The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game with John Beecher’s goal; however, the Avalanche scored four unanswered goals to secure the win. Jeremy Swayman stopped 34 of the 37 shots he faced.
  • After starting the season on a three-game win streak, the Bruins have lost the last three-straight. However, two of those losses were one-goal games.
  • Boston has six players with two goals each for the team-lead: Elias Lindholm, David Pastrnak, Tanner Jeannot, Morgan Geekie, Casey Mittelstadt, and Mark Kastelic. Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha are tied for the team-lead with four assists. Pastrnak leads the Bruins with six points. Since Swayman played on Saturday night, it’s likely that Boston will turn to Joonas Korpisalo in net. Korpisalo has played two games this season and is averaging 3.50 goals against. He has a .851 save percentage through these first games.
  • Sunday’s game is the final on a three-game road trip. The Bruins return home for a three-game homestand that kicks off Tuesday night.

By the Numbers

  • Three Utah players have tallied 10 points against the Bruins: Clayton Keller (4G, 6A – 14 GP), Nate Schmidt (2G, 8A – 20 GP), Mikhail Sergachev (1G, 9A – 22 GP) (per Utah PR).
  • Utah has started its first two seasons with 2-0-0 records at home. The Mammoth have registered a point in 18 of its last 22 home games (per Utah PR).
  • Elias Lindholm is second in the NHL for faceoff wins (66%).
