Players To Watch 👀

Stars forward Wyatt Johnston enters the 2026-27 campaign coming off a career high season in 2025-26. He set career highs in goals (45), assists (41), points (86), points per game (1.05), power-play goals (27), power-play points (42) and tied his career best with four game-winning goals in 82 games played. Johnston finished the regular season tied for fourth in the League in goals and 18th in points, while his 86 points were also the second-most among players under the age of 23, trailing only Macklin Celebrini’s 115 points. Johnston also recorded 27 power-play goals, setting a new franchise record and topping all NHL skaters last year. Additionally, Johnston has recorded a point in all four season opening games that he has played in (2-2—4). He also has at least a point in each of the last three home openers he has played in, notching two points (1-1—2) last year against the Wild and one assist in both 2024 against the Islanders and in 2023 against the Blues. In his career against St. Louis, Johnston has totaled 13 points (8-5—13) in 14 games played, carrying a plus-minus rating of +4. Entering play Friday, he has tallied seven points (4-3—7) in his last five games played against the Blues. His five career power-play goals against them are tied for the league-lead since the start of his rookie season in 2022-23.

Blues forward Robert Thomas led the team in scoring during the 2025-26 season, putting up 64 points (25-39—64) through 64 games played. Thomas also led Blues skaters in both goals (25) and plus-minus rating (+22), while ranking second in takeaways (31) and tied for second in game-winning goals (4). Entering Friday's matchup, Thomas' 460 career points (132-328—460) leads St. Louis skaters in scoring since his rookie season (2018-19) and is tied for 10th in all-time franchise scoring. In 19 career games against the Stars, Thomas has posted 11 points (2-9—11), averaging 18:32 of time on ice per game.

First Shift 🏒

The effects of the Stars’ tight salary cap are already evident.

Because of recent raises given to several players, Dallas has no wiggle room under the salary cap. The Stars will likely carry less than the maximum 23-man NHL roster for most of the season, and that will be tough to navigate on regular nights, let alone when players are injured.

Matt Duchene was placed on LTIR on Thursday and will be unable to play in the team’s first 10 regular season games. To fill in for him, Dallas recalled Arttu Hyry and Colin Blackwell from the AHL and will insert one or potentially both into the lineup during a season-opening back-to-back against St. Louis (Friday) and Nashville (Saturday).

It’s not ideal.

“It’s a part of our business that everyone is involved in, coaches as well,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. “As long as we stay in the same boat.”

While the Stars had an optional practice on Thursday, it appears Hyry will slot into Duchene’s spot on a line with Jamie Benn.

“Artty is going to fill in for that spot,” Gulutzan said. “He played there in our last game in Minnesota and I thought Artty was maybe our best player. We think he’s going to do a great job.”

Hyry, 25, was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Finland two seasons ago. Last year, he played 20 NHL games and had 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists), 4 of which came in his final 8 games. In 94 career AHL games, he has 68 points (33 goals, 35 assists). He’s a solid defender and is remarkably sharp on faceoffs (58.7% in 25 NHL games).

Blackwell, 33, has been a regular on the team for the past two seasons. He was injured early in training camp and did not get into a preseason game. When it came time to make salary cap cuts, he was placed on waivers and made it through. He went with the team to Traverse City, Michigan for team building, but then was assigned to the Texas Stars and practiced in Cedar Park on Wednesday.

“I feel great, to be honest,” he said. “I had a great practice in Austin, got an hour of skill work. It was like a two-hour day and I think it helped me.”

Could he play soon? The Stars will likely alternate several forwards in the bottom six the way they did last season, so it could be Kiviranta, Hyry and Blackwell rotating in and out. That’s just what all will have to deal with.

“It’s not a great start so far. It’s not how I envisioned it, but you work with the cards you’re dealt,” Blackwell said. “It’s all out of my control, so I just put my head down and play.”

Hyry agreed.

“I go day by day and try to do my best and I’ll see where it takes me,” he said.

Duchene placed on LTIR

Stars center Matt Duchene was placed on LTIR with a lower body injury retroactive to September 29. Head coach Glen Gulutzan said they will be cautious with the 35-year-old in his potential return.

“We don’t think it will linger beyond that, but we didn’t think we would be in this spot either,” Gulutzan said. “The last couple of weeks, he just hasn’t been able to turn the corner. But this is what we have to do if we’re going to have a healthy player.”

Duchene battled concussion problems last season and finished with 45 points (16 goals, 29 assists) in 57 games.

Key Numbers 🔢

27

Stars forward Wyatt Johnston led the NHL in power play goals last season with 27. Second place was 20. It was a Stars franchise record.

294

Stars forward Jason Robertson ranked third in the league in shots on goal last season with 294.

25:28

Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen ranked fourth in the NHL in average time on ice per game at 25:28.

He Said It 📢

“I trust this group. It’s a veteran group, so they had the option. They know we’re skating tomorrow for an eight o’clock game, so I gave them the option. Conditioning’s not a factor for the group.”
