Dallas Stars sign Casey DeSmith to a two-year, $5 million contract extension

FRISCO, Texas – Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has signed goaltender Casey DeSmith to a two-year contract extension, which begins at the start of the 2027-28 season and runs through the 2028-29 season. The two-year contract extension is worth $5 million and has an average annual value (AAV) of $2.5 million.

DeSmith, 35, is entering his third season with the Stars after signing with the team as a free agent during the 2024 offseason. During his tenure with the team, he has posted a 29-16-8 record with a .911 save percentage, 2.50 goals-against average and three shutouts. DeSmith has been one of the most consistent netminders on the road during his time with the Stars – among goaltenders to play in at least 10 road games over the last two seasons, DeSmith is tied for second and ranks third, respectively, in the NHL in road goals-against average (2.34) and save percentage (.918). During the 2025-26 season, DeSmith recorded a career-best 13-game point streak (9-0-4), which at the time was a franchise record, from Oct. 26 to Dec. 23, 2025.

“Extending Casey has been a priority for us, and we’re excited to have him locked up for two more years,” said Nill. “He’s been incredibly reliable during his time with our organization, and we are looking forward to the tandem of Casey and Jake continuing to anchor our team moving forward.”

The six-foot, 193-pound goaltender has a 99-69-29 record with a .910 save percentage, 2.74 goals-against average and 13 shutouts in 220 regular-season career games played. He enters the 2026-27 season ranked fifth among active, American-born goaltenders with 13 career shutouts. He has won at least 10 games in seven of his eight NHL seasons, recording a career-best 15 wins three times, most recently last season with the Stars.

The Rochester, New Hampshire native represented the United States at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, which was played in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia. He finished the tournament with a 5-2-0 record, .918 save percentage, 1.95 goals-against average and two shutouts en route to being named one of Team USA’s top three players.
