Panthers Mailbag: Huberdeau Takes Your Q's on Pasta, Iguanas & More!

by Jameson Olive / @JamesonCoop / FloridaPanthers.com

SUNRISE, Fla. - The longest-tenured member of the Florida Panthers, Jonathan Huberdeau is reaching new heights during his seventh season - yes, you read that right, his seventh -- with the club, leading the team in scoring with 50 points (13 goals, 37 assists) in 50 games.

The third-overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, Huberdeau has been piling up points in bunches throughout the 2018-19 campaign, registering a team-best 17 multi-point games, including a streak of six straight contests with at least two points from Nov. 24 through Dec. 4.

But, like every NHL player, Huberdeau is more than just numbers on a sheet.

So for that reason, we asked fans on Twitter and Facebook to send in their questions for No. 11 for another edition of the FloridaPanthers.com mailbag. And from goal celebrations to pasta to iguanas, we certainly learned more than a few new things about Huberdeau through his answers.

Keep reading to see if your question was selected!

Q - Tyler K: How'd you spend the bye week and all-star break?

HUBERDEAU: I went back home to Saint-Jerome. It was pretty cold! I just wanted to go back home and see some family friends. It was me, my girlfriend and everyone else. I just went up there and spent a lot of time outside. We skated and walked on some lakes. It was different, but it was fun. It was a good time and a good chance to get some rest.

Q - Terri P: How much did you miss having Vincent Trocheck around while he was hurt?

HUBERDEAU: Obviously we missed him. He's a big part of our team and in the locker room. He's a funny guy. He's the DJ when he's here, so we had some different music. Hales [Micheal Haley] did a good job with that, but now it's back to Troch. It's good to have him back. He's one of my best friends on the team. We ride to games together, so it was weird to drive to the rink by myself for a bit. But we're back together now, so that makes it even more fun.

Q - @carakxo: What's your favorite pasta shape?

HUBERDEAU: Fusilli.

Q - @Yockrocks: Did you or your dad ever catch that iguana in your backyard?

HUBERDEAU: No. Never did. Not yet. I'm thinking about ideas to catch some. My dad was really working on it when he was here, but it didn't work out.

Q - @FLPantherFan88: Why do you wear No. 11?

HUBERDEAU: In junior they gave me that number when I was 16. I never wore it in minor hockey or anything before that. It wasn't special then, but it feels special now.

Q - @Ianster630: What's your favorite goal celebration?

HUBERDEAU: You don't see it much anymore, but there was one back in the day I really liked. It was the on where you'd throw your glove up in the air and use your stick to shoot it down. That was a special one.

Q - @skylorpwashere: Do you believe in superstitions?

HUBERDEAU: A little bit. I'm not too heavy on that. Obviously I try to do the same routine every game, especially when it's going well. I'm not crazy about it, though. If I don't do something I don't think about it. I do mostly the same thing every day, but if I change it up it doesn't affect me.

Q - @XxTeam48LowesXx: How does it feel to be having one of your best seasons?

HUBERDEAU: I think I'm more consistent. That's what was I've been working on, playing well every night. You can't have four or five bad games in a row. It's going to happen sometimes, but you've still got to find a way to help the team with something good out there. Even if it's not your game, you've got to keep things simple and help the team.

Q - @richieepsteinn: Is there a certain player you look up to on the team? If so, why?

HUBERDEAU: Obviously Barky [Aleksander Barkov]. I've been playing with him for a long time. His work ethic is incredible. He's the best player on the team, but he works the hardest. It just goes to show how hard you have to work. As for a past player, I'd have to say Jags [Jaromir Jagr]. He helped me and Barky a lot. He's a legend.

Q - @v3ktorious: What's the one area of your game you'd like to improve on the most?

HUBERDEAU: Probably skating. I've always had an issue with skating, so I was working on it this summer. I've got to work on it every summer now to get better, get quicker, get stronger. I want to be a faster player. I think you can always get better at skating. It's about the way you skate. I've always skated the same way, so it's going to be hard to change, but I always want to get better.

Q - @RuthKrzyk: What do you do on a free weekend in South Florida?

HUBERDEAU: I live close to the beach, so I'll hop on my golf cart and go there.

Q - If you had to pick one pump-up song what would it be?

HUBERDEAU: I'd have to go with "C'est la vie" by Khaled.

Q - Patrick M: What's the team's mindset entering the second half of the season?

HUBERDEAU: We obviously know where we're at in the standings. We had time to think about it over the break. Obviously you look at the big picture you want to get in the playoffs. We know what we did last year, so why not do it again this year? We fell short by one point, but if we get the same amount of points it's probably going to get us into the playoffs this year. That's what we want to do.
