Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill does not condone the language used by CEO Jim Lites regarding the play of forwards Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin on Friday but said he agreed with the message that the team needs more out of its top players.

"We've talked about that (the language) and addressed that internally," Nill told "Off The Rush" on NHL Network Radio on Sunday. "Jim is a very emotional guy and I just think he let the best get a hold of him a little bit but in the long run, I don't want the message lost either about how the players have to be better, that's the main message. … Lites]*
Lites, in comments published by The Athletic, used expletives to vent his frustration about the play of Seguin and Benn. He was also critical of the two forwards in comments to The Dallas Morning News.
"But for me, it's [upset me], what nobody says is what is completely obvious to me: We are getting terrible play from our top two players," Lites said.
Nill said any added scoring from the two would be a big boost to the Stars.
"As I sit here today, Tyler Seguin is 60th in the League in scoring and Jamie Benn is 78th in scoring. Historically, Jamie is third over the last five years in the entire League in scoring, Tyler is eighth," Nill said. "I know they're not always going to be in the top 10, top 20, but where would we be if they were in the top 30? This isn't all on them, we have to get better in a lot of different areas, but in the end, these guys do have to score. Where would we be at right now with two or three more wins because they're scoring a little bit better? I think we'd be in a really good spot. I guess the urgency is we've been in this [position] before, we don't want to let it slip away. I've talked to the players, they know it. We're in a great spot but let's take advantage of it."

Stars react to CEO's comments about Seguin and Benn

The Stars defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 on Saturday in the team's first game since Lites' comments, with Seguin and Benn combining for one assist.
Dallas (20-16-3) is 4-2-0 in its past six games. It holds the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference and is two points behind the Colorado Avalanche for third place in the Central Division.
"Anytime you get a win it helps," Nill said. "We've actually been playing some pretty good hockey. I know the last couple of days everything that took place, but overall a good win for us. We're playing the right way. We've had a good homestand here and we have to continue on it."
Nill said he has met with both Benn and Seguin to discuss Lites' comments.
"I just went down and talked to Tyler and Jamie. I said we're going to close the door today, no more talking after today," Nill said. "They know they have to be better. I know there's going to be stretches where they're going to struggle, but you have to play the right way and do the right thing and we're going to get through this and they know that. Unfortunately, it came out this way but in the end, they're our leaders, they're going to lead our team. It's not all on them. From management to coaches to players, we all have to get better and we're going to get through this, but they are the leaders of the team and there's a responsibility and accountability that goes with that."
Asked whether he would be open to making a trade ahead of the Feb. 25 NHL Trade Deadline, Nill said he is constantly looking at ways to improve the team, but avoided mentioning any players specifically.
"I think everybody is always open to that. We talk daily as general managers so you're always looking to do things," Nill said. "Now, it's not easy to do. First of all, from player to player, it has to make sense asset-wise and then the cap comes into play long term and short term. You're always open to things. It will be interesting to see moving forward as we get closer to the trade deadline where things go, but my job is to try to make the team as good as I can all the time and that's what we're looking at doing."
Also Sunday, the NHL Players' Association released a statement regarding Lites' comments.
"The comments Jim Lites made regarding Tyler and Jamie are both reckless and insulting," the statement said. "If players directed such comments towards management, how would those be regarded? To say that Jim Lites' conduct is unprofessional would be a gross understatement. In professional sports, all individual players and teams go through highs and lows, but this is not how professionals handle adversity."
