Recap: Coyotes Rally to Earn Point vs. Penguins

GLENDALE --The Coyotes banked another point on Friday night to remain in the mix of Western Conference teams jockeying for playoff contention.
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated Arizona, 3-2 in overtime, thanks to a goal by Phil Kessel with 50 seconds left in the extra session.

Clayton Keller and Derek Stepan notched goals for the Coyotes, who are four points behind the Vancouver Canucks, the team currently residing in the second wildcard spot in the Western Conference standings, with 11 weeks left in the regular season.
"We scratched and clawed," Coyotes Head Coach Rick Tocchet said. "I liked our first (period), I liked our third. They've got star players over there, and we had a chance to win ... Whether it was a point or not, I liked our effort."

• Keller gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead when he scored a 4-on-3 power-play goal at 12:51 of the first period. The goal was Keller's 100th point in the NHL, and he notched it playing in his 132nd game to become the fastest player to reach 100 points since the team relocated to Arizona, besting the previous record set by Max Domi (100 points in 154 games).
"It's a cool accomplishment," Keller said. "But, more importantly, I'm focused on our team, and we're playing good hockey right now ... That's a really tough team to beat over there. It's good to see us not take the night off after a big win against San Jose (on Wednesday)."

• Pittsburgh scored goals 40 seconds apart in the second period and took a 2-1 lead into the third. It lasted until Stepan backhanded the rebound of a shot by Niklas Hjalmarsson past Penguins goalie Matt Murray with 5:26 left in regulation.
The goal was Stepan's first since Dec. 22.
"I've kind of been fighting for a bounce to lay for me, waiting for that moment to get rewarded," Stepan said. "Tonight, the puck laid there for me, and I got the bounce."

• Trying to stretch his personal winning streak to five games, Darcy Kuemper stopped 32 of 35 shots in the loss.
"To come back in the third and tie it up and get the point, it's huge right now," Kuemper said. "We know how tight the standings are. We're hungry, and we're playing like it."
• The Coyotes were briefly awarded a goal after Richard Panik banged a rebound past Murray at 3:41 of the third period. The Penguins challenged the goal claiming Oliver Ekman-Larsson interfered with Murray. After video review, Panik's goal was overturned.
• Ilya Lyubushkin led all skaters with seven hits and leads all NHL rookies with 107.
