Tavares sends Islanders past Flyers in OT in opener

John Tavares scored his second goal of the game 34 seconds into overtime to give the New York Islanders a 3-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at NYCB Live, Home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Sunday in the preseason opener for both teams.

Tavares skated in alone from the right circle into the slot and beat Flyers goalie Alex Lyon with a wrist shot.

Mathew Barzal also scored for New York. Kristers Gudlevskis started in goal and was relieved by Christopher Gibson midway through the second period.

Mike Vecchione and Jori Lehtera scored in the second period for Philadelphia. Lyon played the entire game.

Vecchione gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead 40 seconds into the second when he redirected Shayne Gostisbehere's shot past Gudlevskis. Lehtera also had an assist.

Lehtera made it 2-0 with a shorthanded goal 8:43 into the period. Lehtera chipped the puck past Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock at the Flyers blue line, skated in alone and beat Gudlevskis with a backhand shot.

Tavares made it 2-1 with a power-play goal at 10:01 of the second. Jordan Eberle and Anders Lee had the assists.

Barzal tied it with 14:37 remaining when he put a wrist shot from the right circle past Lyon to make it 2-2.

It was the Islanders' first game at Nassau Coliseum since Game 6 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Washington Capitals in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They moved to Barclays Center in Brooklyn prior to the start of the 2015-16 season.
