Mike Condon, Senators blank Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS -- Mike Condon had to survive a late Columbus Blue Jackets' two-man advantage that was partly his doing, but the Ottawa Senators goalie completed his third shutout of the season, a 2-0 win at Nationwide Arena on Thursday.
With 4:27 left in the third period, the Blue Jackets played 5-on-3 for 60 seconds, the second penalty to Condon for delay of game for shooting the puck over the glass. Columbus defenseman Seth Jones hit the crossbar and Condon made two saves.

Condon, in his 11th straight start, made 19 of his 42 saves in the third period for his fourth NHL shutout.

"What I loved was the players all stood up on the bench and everybody wanted to pull for him and bail him out because he played so well," Ottawa coach Guy Boucher said.
Condon praised the play of the rest of the Senators, many ill with flu-like symptoms the past two days.

"A lot of guys were playing under the weather," he said. "It's a credit to them for going out there and playing a great Columbus team. We knew it would be a challenge and we came through."
Kyle Turris and Ryan Dzingel scored for the Senators (24-15-4), who have won four of five.
Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves for Columbus (30-10-4), losers of five of eight since a 16-game winning streak.
Dzingel, who played three seasons at Ohio State (2011-14) in Columbus, scored his ninth goal at 16:12 of the second period for a 2-0 lead.

The Senators led 1-0 when, after completing their first power play, Erik Karlsson split the defense at the attacking blue line to spring Turris on a breakaway. He lifted a backhand over the glove of Bobrovsky at 16:17 of the first period for his 16th goal.
"We weren't awful, but when you're in your building we need to be harder," Columbus coach John Tortorella said.

Condon stopped a shorthanded rush with 12:44 left in the third period. Zach Werenski slid a pass from the left circle to Cam Atkinson streaking down the slot. He tried to push the puck past Condon, who made the save to keep the score 2-0.

Unsung performance of the game

Senators defenseman Fredrik Claesson, a healthy scratch in nine of the previous 10 games, gave them valuable minutes stepping in for Mark Borowiecki, who was ill. Claesson played 14 shifts for 11:27 of ice time and blocked a shot.

Highlight of the game

Turris' goal was good on both ends. Karlsson's pass through the neutral zone froze defensemen Ryan Murray and Dalton Prout and caught Turris in full stride. Turris did the rest with his deke on Bobrovsky.
