NYI@ARI: Beauvillier buries a shot on the breakaway

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves for the New York Islanders to hand the Arizona Coyotes a fifth loss to start the season, 3-0 at Gila River Arena on Saturday.

Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who are 2-2-1 during their season opening 13-game road stretch and 2-0-1 in the past three.
"[The Coyotes] moved the puck very well, they were hard to contain and didn't give us much," New York coach Barry Trotz said. "But we were able to capitalize on some chances and Ilya made a couple of key saves, really good saves."
Karel Vejmelka made 21 saves for the Coyotes (0-4-1), who have yet to win a game with coach Andre Tourigny and are off to their worst start since 2017-18 (0-10-1).
"Of course, it's frustrating," Arizona forward Liam O'Brien said. "But we've got to take all the positives out of this one and move on. We're doing all the right things and it's going to pay off."
Sorokin's shutout was his first this season and the fourth of his NHL career. He has started all five of New York's games with Semyon Varlamov (soreness) on injured reserve.
Trotz said he hasn't decided if Sorokin or Cory Schneider will start at the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday.
"I feel OK," Sorokin said. "Like I said last year, when you play a lot, you feel more comfortable. The team helped me a lot, we had good luck on some shots and it's good to win."
Cal Clutterbuck got ahead of Coyotes defenseman Victor Soderstrom on a 2-on-1 break and scored with a wrist shot from the left circle to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 16:32 of the first period.

New York was outshot 10-8 in the second, but Nelson made it 2-0 when he redirected Josh Bailey's shot from the slot for a power-play goal at 19:49.
"Sorokin came up big for us and, all in all, we found a way to lock them down and play good team defense," Bailey said. "Tonight was just about getting the win."
Anthony Beauvillier drove to the net off Nelson's lead pass and scored on a backhand at 10:51 of the third for the 3-0 final.
The goal came 31 seconds after Kyle Palmieri had a goal overturned when video review determined the Islanders forward interfered with Vejmelka by pushing his glove, which dislodged the puck.
"I liked our response after the disallowed goal. We came right back out and scored," Trotz said.
Despite the result, Tourigny said he liked the intensity of his players.
"We won battles, we were pretty good, we had good scoring chances, but we couldn't finish," Tourigny said. "We paid for our mistakes. But if we play like that every night, I like our odds."
The Coyotes begin a six-game road trip Monday at the Florida Panthers, who have won their first five games.
"It's the start of the year and we're getting used to a new system, but I think in every game we're getting better and better," O'Brien said. "We're going to get it, and we're going to start winning hockey games."
