The black jersey features the word "Jersey" across the front and includes five stripes on each shoulder to honor the five Devils players who have had their numbers retired:
Ken Daneyko
(No. 3),
Scott Stevens
(No. 4),
Patrik Elias
(No. 26),
Scott Niedermayer
(No. 27) and Brodeur (No. 30).
"The organization has been playing with the same jersey for almost 40 years, and to be a part of bringing a third jersey for our fans to enjoy is going to leave a great mark," said Brodeur, a Devils executive vice president and adviser. "The new sweater is inspired by a history of hockey in the Garden State that fans may not be familiar with, and layered with design elements of Devils championship success. This is a jersey our alumni are envious of that they wished they could have played in it back in their day. People throughout the state and country know us as 'Jersey.' This is our place, our home and this jersey signifies that."
The Devils will wear their third jersey 13 times, starting against the Philadelphia Flyers on Dec. 8. Other dates will be announced Friday.
Brodeur, who played 21 seasons for Devils and has the most wins (691) and games played by a goalie (1,266) in NHL history, deserves credit for the final look, according to New Jersey senior vice president of marketing Jillian Frechette.
"He's really truly the architect of this jersey," she said. "He's the designer. And the two of us were co-creators. We certainly had some feedback and some collaboration with others on our team, president Jake Reynolds included. But it starts and finishes with Marty. And that part is really special."
Among Brodeur's personal touches were lacing at the neck, which is reflective of a goalie net.
"That was probably something a little selfish," Brodeur said. "I figured we needed to put a little goalie thing in the jersey and at first I wanted to get really the hockey net itself to be the string of the jersey and I guess we can't do that. So we can mimic with just the laces that look like hockey netting. So this was kind of a pretty nice touch, I thought."
Brodeur said a few of his former teammates have given their approvals of the new jersey.
"Scott Niedermayer came through and Patrik Elias with a couple of other guys and they saw it," he said. "And they were really thrilled about it. It's an exciting time if it's something new. And I think our fans will love it."
