Maple Leafs defeat Oilers in overtime

TORONTO-- Nazem Kadri scored his second goal of the game 12 seconds into overtime, and Frederik Andersen made 44 saves for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 3-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Air Canada Centre on Tuesday.

Kadri picked up a loose puck and beat Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot to win it. The Maple Leafs (3-4-3) have all of their wins at home.
Talbot made 28 saves for the Oilers (7-2-1).
Kadri beat Connor McDavid in Edmonton's zone before scoring the goal. McDavid had a lengthy chat with an official afterward.
"I have an opinion on it. I don't want to share it too much," McDavid said. "The ref saw what he saw and Kadri made a good play."
It was the first NHL game between Oilers captain McDavid, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, and Maple Leafs rookie Auston Matthews, the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.

"We were obviously very aware when he was out there," Matthews said of McDavid. "A lot of credit goes to [Kadri] and his line who did a great job limiting their chances and making it hard on them."
It was Kadri's second multigoal game of the season. He scored two goals in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 19.
"I like to score goals too," said Kadri, who has five this season. "I like to put up points, and obviously my responsibility is to shut down and make these players not want to play here."
Kadri made it 1-0 1:29 into the first period. Connor Brown beat Oilers defenseman Oscar Klefbom to a loose puck in the Edmonton zone and passed in the slot through the legs of defenseman Adam Larsson to Kadri, who shot past Talbot.
The Oilers tied it 1-1 when Andersen and Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner got crossed up on a dump in by Edmonton forward Mark Letestu. The puck rested on the trapezoid, which didn't allow Andersen to play it. Tyler Pitlick took the puck and centered a pass to Anton Lander, who shot into an open net at 19:29.

The Maple Leafs took a 2-1 lead when Nikita Soshnikov, who made his NHL season debut, played a puck in the corner and found Ben Smith in front of the net, where he tapped a shot from outside the crease that beat Talbot five-hole at 3:14 of the second period.
Darnell Nurse tied the game 2-2 8:38 into in the third period. His shot from just inside the blue line went through traffic and beat Andersen.
Talbot allowed more than two goals in a game for the first time since Oct. 16, a 6-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres (six games).
Andersen has never lost a game in regulation against the Oilers (7-0-1).
"I think they just like to throw everything at the net," he said. "They didn't make that many plays, they tried to see if there are some rebounds to jam in, but I think we were good at boxing them out and clearing the trash out front."

Soshnikov made a heads up play by looking up and seeing Smith skating down the slot to pick up the pass and beat Talbot. "I played with him before with the Marlies, so we already have good chemistry," Soshnikov said of his American Hockey League teammate.

Save of the game

William Nylander fed a pass from behind the net to an open Matthews in the slot. The one-time release from Matthews was saved by Talbot. "There's not much to say about it, he just played tremendous," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "I don't even sound alarmed about it because night in and night out he makes tremendous saves and gives us a chance to win when we make mistakes."

Nurse showed some physicality, delivering a body check to Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner at 12:50 of the first period.

Unsung moment of the game

Seconds before Smith scored to make it 2-1 Toronto, Klefbom had a slap shot from outside the circle that beat Andersen, but the puck hit the left post and stayed out. After Smith scored, officials looked at Klefbom's shot, but it remained no goal.
