Kale Clague gave the Kings a 2-1 lead at 19:15, and Austin Wagner made it 3-1 at 19:42. Lias Andersson increased the lead to 4-1 with a power-play goal 1:59 into the third period before Brent Burns brought the Sharks with 4-2 at 5:47. Tomas Hertl made it 4-3 at 19:19 off a pass from William Eklund, who had two assists. Timo Meier put the Sharks ahead 1-0 at 13:39 of the first period. Jordan Spence tied it 1-1 5:40 into the second. Jonathan Quick made 22 saves on 23 shots playing 31:55 in his preseason debut for Los Angeles. Garret Sparks made 13 saves playing 28:05 in relief. James Reimer, making his San Jose debut after signing a two-year contract July 28, allowed three goals on 21 shots playing the first two periods. Alexei Melnichuk made 11 saves on 12 shots in relief.
