Jakub Voracek lifts Flyers to win in overtime

PHILADELPHIA -- After the Philadelphia Flyers rallied to tie it late in the third period, Jakub Voracek scored at 1:41 of overtime to give them a 4-3 victory against the Detroit Red Wings at Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday.
Claude Giroux led a 2-on-1 rush and passed across to Voracek, who beat goalie Petr Mrazek with a one-timer from the right side for his sixth goal.

"The defenseman] came at me, and I told myself if he comes at me and goes down, I'm going to pass it across," said Giroux, who extended his NHL career-high point streak to 10 games with the assist. "Ended up pretty well."

Flyers defenseman Mark Streit tied it 3-3 when he scored during a scramble in the goal crease with 1:04 remaining.
Chris VandeVelde and Roman Lyubimov also scored for Philadelphia (5-5-1), and Michal Neuvirth made 22 saves.

The Red Wings (6-4-1) have lost 12 consecutive regular-season road games against the Flyers. They last won in Philadelphia on Jan. 25, 1997, a little more than four months before sweeping the Flyers in the Stanley Cup Final.
After Detroit blew a two-goal lead, Henrik Zetterberg scored at 8:18 of the third period to put them ahead 3-2.
The Red Wings had a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals 16 seconds apart by Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou.
It was the eighth time in 11 games the Flyers allowed the first goal, but they're 3-4-1 in those games. Despite earning at least a point in four of those eight games, Philadelphia is looking for better starts.
"We've got to stop doing this," Giroux said. "It's getting too old. We need to find a way to have better starts."

VandeVelde scored his first goal in 55 games at 13:39 of the second period to cut the Detroit lead to 2-1, and then Lyubimov's first NHL goal at 3:51 of the third period tied it 2-2.
Zetterberg finished a 2-on-1 rush for his first goal of the season to put the Red Wings back in front, but the Flyers forced overtime on Streit's goal.
Mrazek stopped Wayne Simmonds' shot from the left post, but in the ensuing scrum in front, Streit banged in the loose puck. The goal was upheld after Detroit coach Jeff Blashill challenged for goaltender interference.
"We came out a lot better today," Zetterberg said. "Had a really good first I thought, played a solid first period. Then they came back. They were strong in the second. I thought it was pretty even in the third. We played a little bit better. But unfortunately, it tied up."
"Pretty disappointing," said Mrazek, who made 36 saves. "You're up 3-2, a minute left in the game, very disappointing."

It's the seventh time the Flyers have trailed a game by two or more goals, but they're 3-3-1 in those games.
It was the second time in eight days Streit tied a game late for Philadelphia. He scored with 1:51 remaining in a 4-3 shootout win against the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 25; Voracek scored the deciding goal.
"We're not happy with our start tonight," Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. "We still have work to do, obviously, to make sure that consistently our starts are better."

When Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist fumbled the puck in the Flyers zone during overtime, Giroux jumped on it to start a 2-on-1 rush. After Detroit defenseman Danny DeKeyser slid down, Giroux passed across to Voracek, who beat Mrazek with a one-timer at 1:41.

The first shot Mrazek faced came on a breakaway by Flyers center Nick Cousins five minutes into the first period. He stayed on his feet and deflected the shot into the corner at 5:02.

Unsung moment of the game

Moments before Voracek scored the winner, he made a strong defensive play with 3:36 left in overtime, knocking the puck off the stick of Red Wings center Darren Helm to deny a scoring chance.

Highlight of the game

Larkin showed his dynamic offensive ability late in the first period. He blocked a shot at the Detroit blue line, raced the length of the ice to get the loose puck, and at top speed lifted a backhand shot from the slot off the crossbar with 1:58 remaining.

Larkin's goal was his 50th NHL point. … Schenn's assist on VandeVelde's goal was his 200th NHL point. … The win was the Flyers' 1,900th. Since entering the League in 1967-68, they're third in victories behind the Montreal Canadiens (2,018) and Boston Bruins (2,014).
