Oilers at Hurricanes | Recap

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Connor McDavid had two goals and an assist, and Leon Draisaitl had a goal and two assists, including the game-winner just 19 seconds into overtime, for the Edmonton Oilers in a 4-3 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Lenovo Center on Saturday.

After Draisaitl won the opening face-off in overtime, McDavid skated the length of the ice before leaving a drop pass for the forward, who beat Frederik Andersen blocker side from the high slot.

“We’ve had lots of opportunities, lots of games that have gone to overtime and we haven’t been able to be the difference a lot of nights,” said McDavid, the Edmonton captain. “That’s what we get paid to do. We get paid to be the difference, and tonight we were able to do that.”

Jack Roslovic had a goal and an assist, and Stuart Skinner made 33 saves for the Oilers (9-7-4), who have won three of their past four games.

“They force you into mistakes and we made a few of them,” Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch said. “But [Skinner] played a really good, strong game. We had the 2-0 lead, but [Carolina] didn’t fade away at all. The difference tonight, (why) we were able to get the two points, was our best players were our best players.”

Zach Hyman had an assist and was plus-1 in 23:10 of ice time in his season debut. He hadn't played since he dislocated his right wrist in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final on May 27.

“It’s good to see him playing. (It was) a significant injury,” McDavid said. “I got to see him firsthand work his way back, and it wasn’t always easy. It never is. Sometimes people forget the human side of it. It’s an emotional thing to go through an injury like that."

Nikolaj Ehlers, Jordan Staal and Eric Robinson scored for the Hurricanes (12-5-1), who were coming off a 4-3 overtime win against the Vancouver Canucks on Friday. Andersen made 19 saves.

“Terrible start, the gaffes,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “It’s the National Hockey League, you just can’t give away goals. Considering what we’re dealing with and the team we were playing there with that talent, I give our guys a lot of credit.”

The Oilers took a 1-0 lead at 3:47 of the first period. Darnell Nurse intentionally dumped the puck from his own zone in on Andersen, who inadvertantly knocked it back out to Roslovic, who had gotten behind the Hurricanes' defense and lifted a shot over the goalie's glove.

McDavid made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 6:30. Roslovic's initial shot went wide of the net, but the puck caromed off the end boards to McDavid, who roofed a shot from low in the left circle.

Robinson cut it to 2-1 at 15:39, receiving a cross-ice pass from Shayne Gostisbehere and scoring with a one-timer at the right face-off dot.

“I think we played a good game,” Robinson said. "We battled back once, battled back again. It’s just tough we had to come back like that. Maybe we weren’t ready from the start.”

Ehlers tied it 2-2 at 1:41 of the second period. Jackson Blake pulled Skinner out of position to the right of the post before passing out to Ehlers, who shot into the open net from the left circle.

Carolina outshot Edmonton 16-6 in the second period.

“They’re a good team, they know how to play the game well,” Skinner said. “That’s kind of how the game goes. We get our chances, they get theirs. A lot of momentum shifts in between periods. We were able to fight them off in the second.”

McDavid scored his second of the game off a rush to put the Oilers back in front 3-2 at 5:46 of the third period. Draisaitl threaded a pass through the legs of Carolina forward Jordan Martinook to McDavid, who tapped the puck in at the left post.

Staal tied it 3-3 at 6:45. William Carrier won a race to the puck along the right boards and warded off Alec Regula as he drove to the net. Roslovic poked the puck off his stick while he was cutting across the crease, but it went right to Staal, who scored inside the right post.

"I thought we were fine. We still obviously gave up too many goals," Staal said. "It's hard to win games when you give up four, but there was some good play and some good opportunities. It could have gone either way. That's a good team."

NOTES: McDavid has 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) during an eight-game point streak. ... Ehlers has eight points (four goals, four assists) during a seven-game point streak. ... It was Carolina's first loss in a game that went past regulation this season (4-1).
